disease oi „ the hear. I his is ti lie to
a great extent, but not altogether
correct. The diagnosis of love is
simple. There is generally a great and
deal of palpitation of the heart,
symptoms of softening of t he brain;
the muscles of the face generally pre¬
sent. a relaxed condition, and there
is a distant, far away look about the
contenance at times. At other timers
there is a soft, subdued look about
the eyes; there is always more or
less involuntary convulsion of the fa
cial muscles, and the poor victim
goes around with every appearance
of Saint Vitus dance. There is a
general derangement of the nervous
system: the sufferer is feverish and
chilly by spells and there is always
a certain amount of delirium; the
appetite craves something sour.
The constitution is terribly shatter¬
ed and there is a strange feeling of
goneness about the whole system.
1 have often wondered how Brig¬
ham Young stood as many attacks
as lie did. I have laid awake many
a night speculating on the number
of pickles comsumed in Utah.
Love at tacks both sexes at al 1 ages,
but manifests its severity reversely
in each. Young girls and old men
get it worst. The older, the more
pronounced the disease, and scien¬
tists claim this on the ground that
they always take to widows or old
maids. If there is anything in the
world calculated to make hoary
headed wisdom toller on her throne,
it is love.
According to stat istics, love causes
ninciy nine hundred and ninety-nine
per cent of the misery in this world.
People suffering with this disease
always write poetry. The other one
per cent is caused directly or indi¬
rectly by gentle spring or beautiful
snow. People in love are liable to
(l(> almost anything, 1 have
known some to marry for love, oth¬
ers marry for money. History
states that men and women eighty
years old have married for love.
They were old enough to know bet¬
ter. YV lien persons catch love and
disappointment at the same time
their systems are irreparably thrown
out of order.
People that have never caught
this disease always march through
life in single file and are noted prin¬
cipally for their cranky cussedness.
Love is marvelous in its ways. I
have known love to cause a dude to
spend his entire fortune on two
plates of ice cream; to stop a man
swearing until after lie was married;
to cause a man to soak his head in
hair oil; to cause a man to put on a
clean shirt and collar and go to
church and act like a Christian.
Cupid is said 1o represent love.
He is a picture of a small boy in a
summer suit of clothes, and has a
bow and arrows. He keeps his ar¬
rows in a quiver. lie also nearly
always keeps his victims in a quiver.
’This last is a joke. I always try to
work in a joke somehow. Cupid is
also said to carry a bottle of laud a
num and to have a seven shooter in
his hip pocket.
Marriage is the only sure cure for
love.—Peck’s Sun.
Mr. Silvester Jones, a gentleman
living in Jasper, Ga., was bit¬
ten last summer by a rattle
snake. Antidotes were given at the
time, and be recovered. Recently
he lias shown signs of nervousness
which increased until on Saturday
he became a, raving maniac, and at¬
tempted to kill his family. He is
confined in jail, with symptons bart, ot
hydrophobia. He, does not
but mskes a hissing sound like a
snake.
The last sale of n slave was made

made a very good trade, while the
seller was satisfied.
The Courier Journal construes the
proposed new pistol law in Kentucky
to be equivalent to a law requiring
Kentuckians to buy their pistols in

next step will be to require Louis
villians to buy their cocktails in
