Gladstone and his political op|^>
nents are having something of a
Gordon and Bacon time over in
paign "Itaki^gdy'of o!e Gem
gia style in several particulars.
The queerest caper in this cam
paign is the fact that the Bacon or
gans give publicity to a gross and
despicable slander on their candi¬
date, and declare that if the Gordon
new'spa|>er8 do not deny it, that
they will be held responsible for it.
We'commend this sort of ousiness
to the attention of the people of
Georgia.
Near Roswci! Junction last week
a party of boys were picking dew¬
berries when they came across an
immense joint snake When it was
struck it flew into five or six pieces,
much to the amazement of the boys
They succeeded, however, in dis¬
patching all the head joint before it
came together again.
A Pittsburg Methodist preacher
said the Union soldiers’ widows
should get on their knees and call
the curse of heaven down on Jeffer
son Davis, and that Mr. Davis ought
to be buried in a living tomb, The
gospel of hate is still tolerated in
some parts of the country.
The Brunswick Herald says work
on the East Georgia and Florida
toad is progressing finely. The the
right of way for every foot on
line from Hart’s road, Florida, to
MlUen, Ga., a distance of 150 miles
has been secured. An important
feature in the construction of this
road is the substantial manner in
which it is being built. There is
not a grade upon the whole line to
exceed two tenths of an inch per 100
feet, or about 26 inches to t he mile.
At this rate there will be not any one
grade on the whole line thnt will
amount to a foot in all. The bridges
across the Satilla, St. Mary’s and
other rivers are being built of iron
by the Penn Bridge Company of
Beaver, Pa.
A small Louisville boy, after be¬
ing naughty and suffering justly at
the maternal hand, or rather a slip
cr, stopped song enough to look
earnestly at his mother and say,
with enfphasls: “Mamina, I’m aor
ry you ever married tny papa.”
“Well, Bobby,” said young Feath
erly, as the former entewl tho store
“what can 1 do for you this morn
ing?. And how Is everything up at
the house?” “All right, I gness. I
heard sister Clara tell ma that she
dreamed about you last night.” “Is
that so?” whispered Featherly,
bending over the counter. “And
what did your your ma say?” “She
said that Clara must have eaten
something what didn’t agree with
her. I want to get a spool of No,
60 cotton aud a dozen bone collar
buttons.”
The city council of Atlanta Mon¬
day amended the tax ordinance so
ns to license the sale of domestic
wines at $100. The council passed
unanimously the ordinance prohib¬
iting the keeping of liquor for un
lawful sale after July 1.
The world is full of disappoint
meut. “Mamma,” cried a five year
old girl. “I started to make my
doll a bonnet and it come out a pair
of pants.”
The Thomasville Times, noting
the expression of a Bacon paper that
“this was a death struggle for Gener¬
al Gordon,” says that “this is just
what the people of Georgia do not
intend shall happen; they do not
intend that the gallant, chivalrous
John B. Gordon shall be sacrificed.”
“Carjiets arc lowev than ever,”
says and advertiser. How can that
be? They were on the floor before.
The arrangements have been made,
the pallet s signed and the Richmond
and Danville Railroad will build
the road from Macon to Athens, di¬
rect, now Macon and Covington
Railroad.
Judge Holman, of Indiana, has
just been nominated for the house of
representatives. This is his 15th
nomination. He began with the
Thirty sixth Congress. He satisfies
his constituents. He is known in
Washington as “the watch dog of
the Treasury.”
Seventeen years ago Thomas
Stewart, of Chicago, was sentenced
to imprisonment for life for the mur¬
der of Harry Hulbcrt. It now ap
pears that Eliza Reilley. a woman
for whom lie had a boyish devotion,
committed the crime, and that he
voluntarily sacrificed himself in her
behalf. He was released from the
penitentiary on Tuesday last.
Excitement in Texas,
Great excitement has been
caused in tbe vicinity of Paris. Tex.,
by the reniarable recovery of Mr. J.
E. Corley, who was so helpless he
could not turn in bed, or raise his
head; everybody said he was dying
of Consumption. A trial bottle of Dr.
King’s New Discovery was sent him.
Finding relief, he bought a large bot¬
tle and a box of Dr. King’s New life
pills; by the time he had taken two
boxes of pills and 2 bottles of the Dis¬
covery, he was well and had gained
in flesh thirty-six pounds.

How much property did the south
lose by the war? In 1860 the value
of all property of the fifteen slave
states was $5,426,042,724. In 1870
it was, approximately, $3,553,757,
000. So t he property lost about two
fifths of its value. In some Statos
the showing was much worse. In
Georgia the property in 1860 was as¬
sessed at $672,000,000. The first re
turn made after the war aggregated
only $170,000,000—about one fourth
what it was before the war. The
loss, however, includes the slaves, of
course.
