democrat should turn outto the polls
on the first Tuesday in January and
vote for the nominated ticket. Don’t
feel that everything will be right and
stav at home, but come out and vote.
You owe it to your country and to
the organization of the democratic
party to see to it that the nominees
ate elected, and this is the only way
it can be done, by voting.

The ladies of the Aid Society of
the Presbyterian church decided to
have their grand Friday oyster night sup er 31st at

ladies have much encouragement.
Let everybody come out, for all
those who can’t eat oysters, will find
plenty of other things to eat jus* as
good.

One of our most enterprising citi¬ told
zens, one who has the money,

one of the ten persons to go into a
stock company in Conyers to manu¬
facture shoes, lie proposes that
each stockholder pay in live linn

ready at any time. This enterprise,
if established, would pay a hand
some dividend and we hope soon to
se6 it under proper headway. Who
will come up with the other nine
shares in this paying enterprise?
It will build the town as well as en¬
rich the stockholders. Let the fac

Mr. J. G. Rowe was married to

Mr. Enoch Stewart, who has been

Mr. Joab Hinton, an aged and
prominent citizen of Newton county,
died at his home on the evening of
the 13th of December. He was born
in North Carolina, May 17th 1797.
lie moved to Newton county in 1824
and since that time has been a citi
zen of that county. At one time he
was sheriff of the county. He was a
good man and has gone to reap his
reward.
The Journal favors lighting the
streets of Marietta with gas. What

Littie Jessie Smith, of Hart coun¬
ty is visiting his grand mother, Mrs.
Eilie Smith, in the city.
Dr. Jas. L. Pierce preached two
very eloquent sermons at the Meth¬
odist church Sunday last.

Sam Poole, col., died at the poor

A warrant was issued for Jim Gar
lington, col. Thursday, for stealing
a cow from Hannah Carter. As yet
he has not been arrested.

Mr. Tom Nix, a highly respecta
ble citizen of Sheffield district, died
at his home last Monday. He had
been sick for some time and his
death was not unexpected. A good
man lias gone.
Col. Si Hawkins lias made the
state ol Georgia a wise, faithful and
satisfactory legislator. He lias rep
resented old Newton with the fidelity
and courage of a Irero, and the abil
ity of a statesman. His election is
but another laurel to the brow of his
county’s honor.
Our own Bill Stewart, of Paper
mill fame, will spent his Christmas iu
Atlanta
It is being reported that a party
of revenue officers made a searching
canvass one day this week in the
southern portion of this county.
They failed however to make any
satisfactory discovery. It may be
well to state that the present revenue
officers are an active and industri
oils set. Within the last 10 days
Butts, Henry and Hall counties have
furnished victims to the raiding of¬
ficers. Up in Hall county a Metlio
(list preacher, whose name just now
escapes us, was arrested this week
while in possession of a 40 gallon
barrel of whiskey.
Mr Toombs Almand lias a fine
rotmer that has five well developed
spurs. On one leg are three spurs,
on the other two. Mr. Almand
thinks the five spurs are a wise pro¬
vision of nature to enable the fowl
to defend himself against tfie at¬
tacks of Methodist preachers.
Last Sabbath the First Baptist
Sunday’ school decided to have a
Christmas tree at the court house
next Tuesday’ night.
Dr. Quigg will preach at the Pres¬
byterian church to morrow.
Mr. Joseph M. McDonald has
been promoted to the responsible
position of night foreman at the Oil
mill. He is one among if not the
most apt employe al the mill. His
promotion is a well deserved corn
pliment.

Church of the St. Paul's, Richmond,
Va., and cun recall the well known
figure of the pastor, Rev. Charles E.
Minnegerode, will learn with regret
of his resignation. Seventy three
years of age, and thirty years rector
of St. Paul’s entitle the aged minis
ter to rest. His kindly ministra¬
tion to the soldiers of the Confeder¬
acy will not be forgotten.

A sad and distressing accident
happened near Monticello Saturday.

A revolting crime is reported from
TWcoa. which was committed in
Franklin county. last week. A man
namei Sanders is rejiorted to have
murdered a whole family named
Swilling, consisting of father, moth¬
er, and three small children, and
then set fire to the house and burned
it to the ground, with everything in
it, in the hope of covering up his
crime. But suspicion fell upon him,
he was arrested, and while the sher¬
iff was carrying him to jail, a mob
of citizens took him into the woods
where he made a full confession of
the-erime. He was tried, convicted,
and sentenced to be burned to death.
He was then taken to the scene of
his crime, his hands and feet were
chmned around a tree, a fire was
built about him. and he was literal
ly roasted to death.
