A BRIEF SERMON.
There was a first-class temper¬
ance sermon by the Libby lady who got
aboard of the J. B. at Lo
pess n day. It has
been © in these col¬
umns, but was in the midst of
other matter, and may have been
overlooked. At all events it beat
reputation. There is about _300
population on the Island, The
old lady was starting to be market
with some produce, to gone
several days, leaving two daugh¬
ters of ten and fourteen years at
home alone. When asked wheth¬
er she was not afraid to leave
them so long alone, she replied
“Oh, no; there is no whisky bad on
the Island, and there are no
people there.” There is a volume
in the remark. It would do no
harm to repeat it everyday.—Post
Intelligencer.
HE WOULD NOT TAKE IT.
The following incident shows
the true bravrery and steadfast¬
ness of a boy who had resolved
never to drink whisky, and by ac¬
cident had his legs so badly hurt
by a passing train that amputa¬
tion was necessary. Of course
he was very weak, and the doctors
said he must have a glass of bran¬
dy. “No brandy fo.-me, doctor,”
he said. “But you need it”, they

Recently, when two hundred or
more drunkards had gathered in
a meeting by the Breakfast Asso¬
ciation, a speaker asked that all
who had begun to drink after 'the
age of twenty-one, would raise
their hand. Six responded. Ho
then asked all that had begun to
drink before they were twenty

sea of hands were raised. By
saving the boys from the saloon
we can go far to save the next
generation.
