A year ajro a license was
granted to a man in Palmer 5
jMnsH., who said he would show
the people that the business
could be carried on in a re
epectable manner, and that
liquor could be sold on “Chris¬
tian principles.’ He had claimed
to be a member of the Old
South Church at Boston, and
was a lcgular attendant at one
of the local churches, The
place soon became the most
popular drinking resort ot the
village, frequented by crowds
of all ages, and the drunken
gangs about the straets soon
became a public nuisance to
passers-by. Sunday was as
good a day for business as any.
One murder was committed by
a man who had spent a part of
the day in this place. A pro
aecution for illegal selling . "on i
Christ’an principles,” resulted
in the suddon lcving of the
Stum by the witnesses. The
selectmen could not find legal
cause to revoke the license.
The “Christian principles’’ ot
the proprietor didn t suit the
people ot the church he attend¬
ed, so a committee invited him
to stay away from communion.
.Somehow the “Christian prin¬
ciples'' in the business seemed
to be lost sight of, and the place
got so bad that a large vote for
HO license has shut off these
« 4 Christian principles ’ for next
year.—N. Y. World.
