ROTATION OF THE GLOBE.
When next you chance to eat an
6ggy ou can easily make an expen
ment, which is not only preductive of
much amusement, but also illustrates
in a manner so clear and simple that
even a c Lild can comprehend it, the
^ ou ^ e movemen t of the earth, which
revolves simultaneously around the
sun and a its -t own axis. ■
Moisten slightly with water the rim
of your plate and in the center paint
with the yolk of the egg (you see that
you have not far to g0 for coIoring
material) a sun with gold rays. Then
you have to do is to place the
empty half shell of your egg on the
Iam °f the plate, and keeping this
latter duly sloped and shifting it
gradually around so that the shell
may always have an inch or two of
descending plane before it, you will
see the egg shell begin to revolve
rapidly on its own axis, at the same
time traveling round the plate.
The slight cohesion caused by the
water which moistens the plate coun¬
teracts the centnfugul force and so
prevents the egg shell falling off the
edge of the plate. After a few trials
you will find it one of the most amus¬
ing tricks of the day.—Chicago Sat¬
urday Blade.

RICHEST WOMAN IN AME¬
RICA.
HETTY GREEN, WHO IS NOW WORTH"
$40,000,000.
In point of business qualifications
Hetty Green has few equals in the
country. No person on Wall street
is better known or look more to as
a “guide” than she is. She is a
remarkable specimen of executive
ability in all the details of finance,
Hetty’s defects, indeed, are the re¬
sult of heredity, and therefore she i®
not entirely to blame. Her father*
the late Edwin M. Robinson, of New
Bedford, was miserly in the extreme,,
and having made a good start in the
whaling business he gradually piled
up $6,000,000. He sent her to the
city for education, and she was
noticed by some rich families of New
Bedford origin (including the Grin—
nells,) but her parsimonious dress
and ill appearance generally pre-.
vented her reception into good
society, and she returned home to
pursue the natural inclination to
hoard money.
“Her marriage was the mere com¬
bination of two fortunes. Edward
H. Green had been for some years
in the China trade and was worth
nearly $1,00,000, but the vastly
greater wealth of Hetty Robinson
was an irresistible attraction, even
though he could not control it.
Hetty, indeed, placed him under an
ante-nuptial agreement which bar**
red any benefit, except the repute
which the connection with a rich,
woman might afford. Soon after
marriage Green began speculating
in Wall street, and his wife was
encouraged by his success. This
led her to guarantee his account at
Cisco’s bank to the amount of $400,
000. Not long afterwards, however,
he lost all his fortune by a bad
change in the market and exhausted
his credit at Cisco's to its full extent.
“The banker notified Hetty of her
responsibility, which excited her
wrath, and she immediately posted
down and demanded the payment of
all her funds. Cisco was not able to
meet this, and thereupon Hetty
forced him to close his doors and
announce suspension of payments.
This was the first time a woman
ever closed a first-class bankings
house. Hetty then determined to d»
i he speculating herself, and make
Green stay at home. She operated
with great boldness and success and
has been a wonder to the general
crowd of bulls and bears. Her in¬
vestments are carefully watched and
the income is immediately reinvest¬
ed, and in this manner Hetty has
accumulated a score of millions—
some, indeed, estimate the amount
at double that sum. Hetty lives
privately in order to avoid taxes.
For this reason she left the city and
took an humble residence at Long
Island. Such is Hetty Green. I do
not mention her as an ornament to
her sex, but merely to show that the
latter can hold a place among capi¬
talists and Wall street operators in
a bold and independent manner.”—
Thomas Clyde in Troy, N. Y. Times.
