Negro Killed.
A negro boy, Otis Phillips,
was killed by the accidental dis¬
charge of an “ unloaded pistol”
in the hands of Frank Curry, on
the place of Mr. T. T. Thrasher,
Tuesday, last. Coromor Argo
held an inquest and a verdict
was rendered “accidental.”
He Has a Good Platform.
John H. Williamson, colored,
of Raleigh, N. C., has announc¬
ed himself as a candidate for
congress upon a good platform.
He says his platform will be
compensation for negro slaves
freed by the war, as proposed
by President Lincoln, at the
time he issued his emancipation
proclamation, who admitted
that they were the lawful prop¬
erty of those claiming to be
their masters, and offering $300
a piece for them, in order to
liberate them and stop the war.
Williamson is an old Coving¬
ton boy, and was raised in
Newton county.
He was once the slave of
Gen. Williamson, of this coun¬
ty, and is a well educated and
intelligent man.
While we do not believe his
platform will ever amount to
anything, still we believe it is
right. The slaves freed should
be paid for, and it is perhaps
the proper thing for a colored
man to move in the matter
first.
The Star can only say: Hur¬
rah for Williamson and his
platrorm.—Cov. Star.
