I come to bay that them Summers boys down on Center street, are doing *the h siness of Conyers. Everybody is attending their great removal sale. The fact tnat 46 month old house is ready to measure ulanees ” with 30 year old houses speaks loud for The Situation. Some of our best citizens have expressed a determination of abandoning the democratic par tyj and with their leadership a great many other good people will follow; thus the party is at this time in a serious situation. Nearly a quarty of a century ago the democratic party wres¬ ted the State of Georgia from republican hands. Under re¬ publican rule w*e had a bad state of affairs. The state was pros¬ tituted, the laws were bad and badly administered, the Legisla¬ ture was composed largely of negroes and men who had no real interest in the state, and the judges did not command the respect of the people. Bad men were hold and the state was saddled with an enormous debt, and were on the verge of ruin and anarchy and the Re¬ publican Governor, tied the country into alarm. Then it was that the Demo¬ cratic party arose in the power of her might and swept the Re publicans from power in this grand old state. Since time we have gone along to prosperity and good govern ment under such democratic leaders as Hill, Tombs, Colquitt, Gordon and many others, till now our state is the equal of any in the Union for just laws, christain rulers, able cod ; m tions judges and fearless: one¬ cutors of the law Our system of taxation is just and the rate reasonable. The credit of the state is as good as that of the United States itself Our public debt, in view of the CONYERS, GEORGIA, SATURDAY MAY 21, 1892 magnificent property the State owns, is comparatively nothing. We pay our old soldiers and the widows of soldiers liberally. Our school system and state control of railroads is the ad¬ miration of ever other State in the Union; and thus our state under democratic rule is the Empire State of the South. Suppose now that as many as one third or half of us join the “third party,” can the dem ocrats maintain control of the state ? Certainly not. Can the “third party” get control if lial or u wo thirds of our people re¬ fuse to leave the democratic party? Impossible. Then what The state of Georgia goes into republican hands so certainly as she stands. Would the re publican party continue to pay pensions to confederate sol diers and their widows ? Could the State’s credit and dignity be maintained as it now is ? Could we get from the republi¬ can party in Georgia as able and as good men us we have now Would such men as Bleckly, Lumpkin, Marshal J. Clark, Boynton and others serve as judges in the republican party ? We hud republican rule once and w r e all what it means in this State. God deliver us from it again, vYe are much more largely interested . , in . our State , and State laws than m those of the Federal government. W e P a >’ no direct tax to the Lmted Slates, and get no direct benefit from the United States. We look directly to the State for protection in our lives, our Ub erty and our property. United States gu;t ntees these three things collai Gy only— and beyond these wee things no government > the earth can safely go. It i not, and cannot be in the power of any government on the face of the earth, now or hereafter, to leg¬ islate financial prosperity fo the people. This is purely a personal an individual matter, and must be done by each indi¬ vidual citizen for himself, if done at all; for the government cannot do this for us, and the sooner we disabuse our minds of this foolish idea the sooner we will become better off. A government of the people, with just laws economically ad¬ ministered by officers selected by the people, with the lowes rate of taxation consistent with the actual needs of he govern ment, and with equal rights to all and special privileges to none is simply the finest system of government on the earth—and this is the Democratic faith as enunciated and expounded by Thomas Jefferson, the great f ather of the democratic party and the American constitution aud the ablest statesman the world ever saw, and is the kind of government citizens of Geor gia enjoy to-day, so far as our state is concerned. And ever we commence to depail from ^ the democratic faith, we ( to undeml ine our masuiHl ? . pnt state .J government, w] h is a lumdl fold dearer to ub l “ government, ” “We are one people, „ out m- in are a “ e aud ““parable, Let »s stand together m the l grand old democratic party, the PRICE 1 00 A YEAR. *n Jffa'jnf I 1 lik >i '■ fefS ' ■^4==®* ' = ,1 W- IjpP ’ This man was scared into fits when heJieard of SUMMERS BROS. Shall we, the people of Georgia, forsake the demo¬ cratic party ? Heaven forbid. Let us look at this third par¬ ty a little. Now, the people of Georgia, who have exposed it for the most part good citizens. But where did the the party it self originate? “Sockless” Jer¬ ry Simpson and Mrs. Lease, of Kansis, were the hirst to sow the seed of third partyism in eorgia. Kansis, you remem her, was next to Pencilvania in the strongest republican State in the Union. It was John J. lngols of Kansas who heaped such bitter epithets on the South. It was Airs. Caniield of Kansas who, after she had been entertained in Southern homes went back and wrote a that she “longed to see the day whens ie could from a convemmt place in Lllc skl<!s look down on the South and behold black heels on white neck.” Thus the men . Kansas have and women of maligned add vilified us, and have always done so; and while 1 have no bitter word fur a.iy human being, can it be possible that these people wish us any good? Does it stand to human reaso rea son ? I think not, On the other hand I believe that it is the hope of Kansas friends, t0 tailed, to divide and split u H mm ■■(111 \\ Ath '3 mmifr « * I- *' ■A m Mi m > m* m OW33 J3IVJOYSI Both the method and results when Syrup and refreshing of Figs is taken; it is pleasant to the taste, and acta gently Liver and yet promptly on the Kidneya, Bowels, cleanses the sys¬ aches tem effectually, and fevers dispels colds, head¬ and cures habitual constipation. only Svrnp of Figs is the duced, remedy pleasing of its kind over pro¬ to the taste and ac¬ ceptable its action to and the stomach, prompt in effects, prepared truly only beneficial in its from the most healthy excellent cud agreeable substances, its many all and qualities commend it to have made it the most popular Syrup remedy of Figs known. is for sale in 50c and $1 bottles by all leading drug¬ gists. Lot us beware of these people “ The feeling is that of Esau, hut the voice is that of Jacob. ” In my judgment our people of Georgia who have espoused this tin's third party are simply mis¬ taken.
