Rockdale farmers have bought
at least 25 per cent, more gu¬

It is now settled that the new'

ago will not be built this yeax-,
as the charter will not allow it.
Big Bullie Bissell says no man
shall be post master who has
any other business. B. B. B. is
a fit mate for B. B. Cleveland.
It is our honest opinion that
the present administration has
moi-e bowels and less brains
than any administration since
1492.
Owing to the continued had
weather friend Jim Tilley failed
to get in his full crop of pea
nuts. Lookout for a rise in the
foreign raised.
Its our opinion that Grover
Cleveland is just a little too big
for his britches. Somebody will,
have to take the young l ei low
down a button hole or too.
It is cir-t.unary hi all cities
for the rulers of the city to
publish reports of their acts for
the benefit of the people. It is
not done in Conyers.
The county officers that
handle the people’s money
should make a report and puo
lish once a year, at least, for
the benefit and gratification of
the tax payers.
The physicians of the Grady
tlospital has boycotted the news
paper reporters. Wonder what
the great spirit of the immortal
Grady thinks of such proceed¬
ings. ?
In our opinion it would be a
good idea to hang about one
half of the crazy murderers.
Rerhaps a course of this kind
would turn the crazy people to
commit good instead of bad
deeds.
Did you ever think of the
number of smart, pretty women
and girls in Couyei'S in the
stores. A man can step in al¬
most any store in town and
find a woman that would make
a wife fit to adorn any home.
Judge McCalla carries in
each pocket a buck-eye, pecan
aud almond ; all grown in Rock¬
dale county, and he prizes them
very highly. The Judge is a
great believer in home and
home people aud enterprises.
It is strange that our country
papers do not try harder to
keep their people away from
the big cities and persuade them
to trade with their home mer¬
chants. Perhaps the home mer¬
chant refuses to patronize the
home paper and he has no heart,
as it were, to work for the home
merchant. If the merchants
will patronize to a liberal ex¬
tent their home papers, they
will find that it will pay them
iu many ways. Not alone will
the advertisements you may in¬
sert do you good, bnt the paper
will work for your town, work
to hold your home ti-ade and to
bring you more and work to
make you prosperous and hap¬
py in every way.
CONYERS, GEORGIA, SATURDAY -MARCH IS, 1800.
Office 1
Office, office!
Give me office or I'll give you
-is the cry of the average
constituent.
No republican office holders
are to be turned out. Great is
Grover!
There are enough applicants
for office in Georgia to make
corn enough to do the state two
years.
j Cleveland’s an old bigot. Gres
| ham and then Maxwell!
i The mugwumps, are surely get¬
ting there.
“ You have opened my eyes
on the shopping question ” said
a good lady to us tho other
“ and hereafter I will do my
shopping at home.”
Grier Quigg was a good, hon¬
est post master. If tho civil
service oath was canied out by
Harrison why was Quigg re¬
moved.
Cleveland is opposed to those
who held office before holding
it again under him. To have
been consistent Cleveland slio’ld
not have applied for a second
term.
The country editors, the boys
who did the hard, rough aud
tumble work will be almost
entirely foigotten in the distii
bution of the offices. It is well;
they will be more useful and
much happier at home.
Every week we see notices in
our country exchanges that
“ Mrs.'so and so was in Atlanta
shopping this week.” If all tho
Mrs. so and sos would do their
shopping at home our country
merchants aud country exchan¬
ges would get along better.
If Clark Howell would quit
writing for the New Yoi’k Hei-
ald and put some good old time
editorials in the Constitution
like Grady once did, he would
give more satisfaction to home
people. Clark Howell is an able
young felLow and can do it if he
will.
Several good people have
seen fit to endorse our article in
regard to home trade.” Now,
if our people of every profes¬
sion, men, women and children
—black and white—will adopt
the plan of patronizing home,
they will find that it will work
to the benefit of the town and
of themselves.
Fditor Ad Shaver, of the Dal¬
ton Argus, has quit chewing to¬
bacco. This will be a pleasant
surprise, no doubt, to Mr. Sha¬
ver's many acquaimauces. His
“ chews ” were the largest hand¬
led by any man in this country
and his most liberal friend al¬
handed him his “ plug ”
ways
with a sigh.
First Lady :—I am going to
Atlanta to-morrow to buy some
spring goods.
Second lady :—You are ! I
suppose I will have to go along
with you I want to see a physi¬
cian.
First Lady A physician!
Why in the name of goodness
don’t you see my husband. He
is as good a doctor as you will
find in Atlanta?
Second Lady Why don’t
you buy vour spring goods from
my husband ? He is a mei'ehant
and has a beautiful line of
spring goods.
If the lady who wants the
goods will buy them of her
home merchant the home mer¬
chant can give the money to
his wife to consult the home
doctor. If both ladies go to At¬
lanta botli husbands will be out
money and the Atlanta doctor
and the Atlanta merchant will
have it all. /

The city dumping ground'
all the tilth that accumulates
on the streets, around the stores,
markets, ete., are thrown out
right in the heart of our city;
i within 50 yards of the court
!house; within 75 yards of the
main business street of the town
arid within 40 or 50 yards of
some of the best dwellings in
the city. How is it that our
sanitary committee allows this
thing to go on to the detriment
of the town and-endangering
the health and lives of our peo¬
ple ? Not only should ibis mafc

The Fertilizer Trade. ;
After having talked with all
of our dealers in fertilizers, wp
are thoroughly satisfied that the
sales at this place will go atleast
30 per cent, above- last year ;
and we are also satisfied that
the amount of cotton planted
will go at least 25 per < ent.
above last year. If this per
cent, holds good all over the
cotton growing area there will
be raised the coming season
more than 9 million hales of
cotton, and we look for cotton
to go to 5 or (J cents again next
fall. With cotton at 5 cents
and meat at 12 cents our people
will be in a fearful condition.
The sales of guano are tremend¬
ous all over the country; in
some places going as high as
fifty per cent, over last year.
Insure Your Homes.
I ou have a plenty of this
wo !’s goods and have it scat¬
tered around in different prop¬
erties, perhaps you can get
along without insurance, but if
you have only a home, the re¬
sult of years of hard toil which
might in a few hours be .swept'
away by fire, you cannot in
justice to yourself and little
ones afford to go without in¬
surance. The cost is but little
in comparison with tho protec¬
tion, and the feelings of safety
you wil have. No man is too
poor to insure and its the best
money a poor man ever spent.
Papsuckers.
There has been in Washing¬
ton perhaps a thousand men
from Geoi'gia within the last
ten day begging for an office.
It is thoroughly disgusting to
se men of ability and standing
at home who can do well in al
most any avocation of life

office like a free nigger for a
drink.

ance upon our schools. The
attendance at Oakland Semi¬

the last month. Prof. Guinn

The lesson of recent events is

The flour manufacturers of
north-west are forming a mon¬
ster trust for the control of’.the
prices of bread in the country.
Bread stuffs will be high next
fall. And yet, the farmers con¬
tinue to raise a big crop of cheap
cotton to buy high-priced food.
They can very naturally expect
hard times when they follow
such a suicidal policy.
A ccordiug to tho Romo Trib¬
une Hon. H. W. J. Ham, the
snoHygoster lecturer, says there
are three dollars for the lecturer
at the north where there is one
here. Mr Ham forgets that the
people of tho south know the
Georgia “cracker” about as well
as Mr. Ham does, and that the
jokes with which his lecture
abound are heard on southern
street corners every day. Up
north it is different; Mr. Ham’s
lecture is something new to them
and they’ appreciate it accord¬
ingly, However, if Mr. Ham
thinks he can do better up north
than, down south, Georgia will
give him j uave to tiy thu expen¬
n ient.—Hatton Argus,
Certainly she will. People
down oar way like haffi, hut are
not much stuck ou the “sugar
cured ” variety.
There aro some men who, it
seems, actually detest anything
like decency, enterprise or pro
gress. If you make a kick
against using the. yard in the
rear of the court house for a
dumping ground for the filth
and garbage of the town, they
are mad ; if yon make a kick
about the nasty, old wooden
awnings v '.;ich Gang, over our
streets—a pall of disgrace—
they sneer about it; if you want
a few dollars spent on the streets
to get the old cotton xidges out,
they mumble and paw about
being taxed to death. It would
be better for the town and the
people who want to do some
ting and move along if such
people were not here.
