Give the People Work.
We notice that the people of
Atlanta are organizing to pa
tronize home industry—to pa¬
tronize one another. They have,
also, come together for the pur¬
pose of giving employment to
the idle labor in the city. This
is a line on which we have been
talking for sometime, but it
seems that our people will not
oct on it. For the sake of the
welfare of our town, our insti¬
tutions and our families, we
ghould {atronize home aud keep
what little money we have here.
We live by working one for
another—the blindest man can
not help seeing and knowing
this fact. Again we all know
that we have a great deal of
labor here that is lying idle that
should be employed. People
must live and if those in power
who have money and work to
have done will not employ them
what are they to do ? Our town
is covered with weeds
and grass; our streets are knots
and gullies ; our cemetery looks
like the burying ground of some
“ Deserted village; ” our child¬
ren, instead of filling their deli¬
cate lungs with pure air, are
forced to use the death dealing
Stenches that come from filthy
hog pens and other dirty places.
At the very entrance to the
cemetery and within 50 yards
of the home of a city official
are hog pens that stink so bad
you can not puss them without
“ holding your nose. ”
a new " move on things."
Clean up the town give work to
those who are willing to work
and whose families need it.
Those who claimed that our
congressman would be in favor
of the unconditional repeal of
the Sherman law were wrong.
Mr. Livingston is for fre silver
firmly aud square!y.
Mr. Cleveland sayt he wants
a mefcalic money that r 11 tbs
world will recognize. As Amer¬
ica is about the only nation that
wants silver as a standard, Mr.
Cleveland must be a gold hug.
Since the elevation of Hess
Thauhausor & Co., two beauti¬
ful, slick Atlanta niggers have
been safly landed in office by our
able representative. We learn
that just as soon as Baloni Pea
intti aud Sain my Rateater can
be provided for we may look
for some action in the Conyers
Post office matter.
In our cemetery to-day lie
some of the sweetest little ones
that God ever gave to fond
parents; carried there by
breathing hog pen filth. It Is a
sad sight to see the bloom taken
from their fair brows; to see
the fond mother bending over
the cradle where they are lying
burning and dying with fever ;
to see the hearse come to the
door and carry them off to the
cold grave. Is there a man in
our town who will say such has
not happened, caused by the
noxious fumes that come from
the dirty pig sties ? There is
not swme enough in the t©wn
to pay for one carress from
their loving little arms.
When you want meat, meal,
flour, sugar, coffee, rice, saus¬
age, cheese, potatoes, ouious,
flue syrup, molasses, all kinds
of cauued goods, fancy candies,
cigars, tobaccos, etc., etc., etc.,

TO THE PUBLIC.
In consequence of the death of our friend and fellow-citizen,
Mr. D, W. Murdock, it becomes necessary for some one to be
elected to the place of Tax Collector which he so ably filled.
Being conversant with Mr. Murdock’s affairs and the con¬
dition of his worldly estate, after advisement, and with a pure
motive to do full justice to the memory of the deceased and his
most worthy widow, I have this proposition to submit to the
public :
As is generally known, Mr. Murdock died possessed of real¬
ly nothing, and his outstaudiug debts, contracted during the
year on the strength of his office, are unpaid. To these have I
been added burial and funeral expenses. His friends in the
city and courity have stood to him with fidelity and devotion,
and it is my purpose to give Mrs. Murdock, the widow of the
deceased Tax Collector of Rockdale county, half of the pro
teeds of the office for the unexpired term, WHICH WILL
AMOUNT TO $200 A YEAR FOR HER, OR $400 FOR HER,
FOR THE TWO YEARS. So far Mr. Murdock
’
■
> „ , . . ,
has only served about 7 months of the time, but really his books
are not even received to date upon which to make out the tax.
Believing this proposition will mete out the honor due to th e j
memory of the noble hearted dead, and at the
>
same time contribute substantially to the help of his broken
hearted and afflicted widow, I beg to subscribe myself.
Conyers, Ga,., Aug. 18,1893. Very respectfully,
Leonidas F. Scott.
I guarantee the bond, and that the above proposition will
be faithfully performed. John H. Almand.
Conyers, Ga„ Aug. 18, 1893.
I heartily approve the above as it will enable me to pay
the recent debts of my husband aud the funeral expenses.
Conyers, *Ga„ Aug, 18,1893. Mrs. Susan Murdock.
Signed in my presence. J. N. Hals,
The above propositioh made by Mr. Scott, it seems to us,
has in it all the elements of fairness. For seven months Mr
I
Murdock supported himself by the help of friends looking after
such business of the county as was his duty, and we believe it
is nothing but fairness that his widow should have a part of the
proceeds of the office. If anyone has a better offer to make
than Mr. Scott’s, let him do so. If Scott is elected, we believe
he will fill the office well and we are satisfied that he will carry
out his promises to the letter. J. N. Hale.
