"When the election comes oi
to vole on bonds to carry out
the Public School, we are con¬
fident that there will be no op¬
position to the issuing of them.
Let the tax come lightly and
gradually and no one will be
hurt or feel the burden oppres¬
sive.
Yellow fever is raging in
Brunswick. About 20 new ca¬
ses and one death reported for
this week.
The indications now are that
the cotton crop this year will
go over 7 million bales. If it
does, cotton is about as high as
it will get.
We have heard nothing of
the Hon. W. H. Hulsey since
he announced for Congress last
spring. Wonder if tho Col. is
still in the race?
Hon, John L. Tye, of Atlanta,
one of the brighest young men
in the State, would make an
acceptable Congressman to the
people of the 5th Congtessinal
district. \
If Cleveland had to pick cot¬
ton at 35 cents a hundred to
“ buy the baby a dress ” lie
would be yelling for free silver
as big as anybody.
They now say that Itenfroe
will be postmaster at Atlanta.
Wonder if this will 'be another
victory for the great Secretary
of the iuside.
The great Secretary of the
inside and the great Col. of the
outside, assisted by the great
Johnihall, have, at last, given
Conyers a Democratic Post
hiasto. Thanks awfully.
Congress is still hammering
on the financial question. Noth¬
ing, so far, lias been done. The
senate has never acted on the
repeal of the Sherman bill, but
will vote for repeal.
Mark our prediction : Hon.
L. F. Livingston will be in the
race for congress next year as
an anti-administration candi¬
date. The Col. is able and shifty
and may make it warm for the
boys.
White Caps in Mississippi
have demanded that farmers
have no cotton gined and that
they hold it for ten cents. The
gin ^houses of several farmers
have been burned for disobey¬
ing orders.
Judging from the tune of the
press of the State, Clay and
Evans are the most prominent
Democratic possibilities for gov¬
ernor next time. As one of the
potters of the state we want no
better clay than Jionest Steve.
Another Atlanta rugger got a
^
job in Washington the other
day, through Col. Livingston so,
also, did a printer. A special
car will be here in a few days
after the lucky ones from Rock¬
dale. Friend Sparks will lead
the delegation.
A certain Georgia Congress¬
man, one we all know well,
was talking to a Rockdale man
a short while ago and said :
“ I promise “Oh, — ” said
the Rockdalian “ excuse me.
Don’t talk to me about promi¬
ses, ” and walked off.
Working late at night some! is a
sure sign of laziness—in
fiwtituces.
Our Farmers Best Off.
In line with several recent
editorials in The Argus, to the
effect that our Georgia fanners
are the best off of the farmers
of any section, and best off of
all classes, the New York Post
and the Atlanta Constitution
have a few words to say. The
Post has been investigating the
condition of the farmers in sev¬
eral states, and gives the result
of its investigation as follows :
Percentage Average
rate of
of farms ititere.-t
Motarn. mortgaged. 15.fi percent. 11
.....
Kansas. ..... 84 4 f.t
Minnesota............. 4U4 8 2
Wisconsin.... 42 8 ii.fi
Iowa............ 53 8 7.3
Ohio............. 204 08
New Jersey. 43 5.7
Massachusetts........ 30.5 5.6
Vermont.......... 444 5.9
Tennessee......... 3.2 « 2
Georgia............ ... 3 3 8 3
■South Carolina. 8 8.8
It will be seen that the states
of Kansas, Iowa, New Jersey,
Minnesota, Wisconsin, Ohio
Massachusetts and Vermoat
have a farming population who
are badly debt-ridden, but who,
judging from the number of
recent failures by merchants in
those states, are no worse off
than the other avenues of livii
hood. In contrast with these
the state of Georgia shows up
with about three per cent, of
indebtedness by its farmers.
The Post says :
“ The southern states of Tenn¬
essee, Georgia and South Caro¬
lina differ much fioni the others.
Less than half their firm land
is owned by the occupiers, but
of this portion nearly the whole
is free from debt, though a part
of that debt (on a very small
percent of the owned Land) was
contracted to pay for family or
farm expenses. The planters
in these states who do own
their farms (though they are
,n a minority) appear to bo
prosperous.
Commenting on the Post’s j
statistics, the Constitution says;
“With these figures before
us it is reasonable to assume
that farmers generally are not
hampered by their indeb ed
ness as much as the great mass
of men engaged in other pur¬
suits. They feed and clothe
the world, and the increasing
population of consumers will
have to pay them more money
every year fot their products.”
True. Our farmers are our
best off, most independent class
There is no line of business as
free from debt, no calling as in
dependeut, no people as free,
In individual instances they
may not be as rich as some oth
ere, but as a whole they come
neater having plenty, and being
freer from hunger and
privation than any other class.

A SWORN CURE FOR ST. VITUS’S DANCE OR CHOREA.
CRA.v.'For.Dsviu.r., 1st*., May 13.1S86.
My daughter, twelve years old, had been af¬
flicted for several months with Chorea or St.
Vitus’S Dance. She ivas reduced to a skeleton,
could not walk, could not talk, could not swal¬
low anvthiug but tnilk. I had to handle Iter
like an infant. Doctor and neighbors gave her
up. J commenced giving ber the South Ameri¬

prising. In three days she was rid of the ner¬
vousness, and rapidly improved. Four bottles
cured her completely. I think the South
