ed the state of Virginia against
the Democroatic party. Result:
Over thirty thousand Democrat¬
ic majority. Sam ought t»
come to Conyeis and make
another political speech. Our
people appreciate (?) Sam.
Hale, of that hearty weekly,
known far and near as •' Hale’s
Weekly, ” not only does good
work at home, but when he
strikes the legislature he is im¬
mense. Hale's all right every¬
where.— Atlanta Constitution.
Dr Hawthorne Is Right.
Dr. Hawthorne, in a sermon
preached at First Baptist church
in Atlanta, last Sunday, de¬
nounces the cranky women
who bore a conspicous part
in a christain’s convention re¬
cently held in that city ; women
who have forsaken husband
pud children and are prowling
around over the counLy doing
work (?) for God. Below we
give a few paragraphs of his
termon which appeared in Mon¬
day’s Constitution :
“ God's law assigns to the
husband certain duties for
which he is constitutionally fit¬
ted, and to the wife another
Class of duties, suited to hei
more delicate and sensitive or¬
ganism. That law makes the
husband ‘ the bread-winner, the
defender of home, and the rep¬
resentative of the family to
rough the outer world.’ It
make3 the wife ‘the mistress
and li 'it of the inner woild—
thsheme.’ To transgress this
law is to despise God’s wisdom
and to wreck the family. Let
the hus'oaud detht oue the wife
by depriving her of her rightful
authority In the sphere to which
God lias assigned her, and do¬
mestic disorder and infelicity
will follow. Let the wife usurp
the functions of the husband,
and the consequences will be
equally as sad and disastrous.
“ Now’, if husband and wife
would serve and honor God,
they must recognize and obey
the law which so clearly defines
their respective spheres of la¬
bor and authority. When the
wife goes to the ballot box and
votes, or to the court room to
practice law-, or on to the plat¬
form to make a political speech
she is not only disloyal to her
sex, her husband and her child¬
ren, but she is practically an in¬
fidel. Whether she means to
do it or not she is giving support
to a do triuo which had its ori¬
gin among the Jacobins of
France.
A PERVERSION OF NATt'RE.
“ Let no woman call that a
work for God which violates
the plain law of God as contain¬
ed in the sacred scriptures. The
woman who attempts to per¬
form the functions of the Chris
taiu miuistry, repudiates the au¬
thority of divine revelation,
perverts her own nature, and
sows the ends of social discord,
anarchy aud ruin.
“ The iimo has come when
every man who is loyal to the
welfare of woman, and every
woman who is loyal to her own
sex should speak out lu con¬
demnation of this unn’Klieous
aud mischievous departure fretn
God's order. Vaul prescribed
as or f the qualification for
tha v nk for the Cnristian
^rcvpUet that a man must ac-
knowledge that the law pro¬
nounced by him, forbidding wo¬
men to speak in the church, is
a commandment of God. Im¬
mediately after having this in¬
junction upon women, he says ■
‘ If any man think himself to
be a prophet or spiritual, let
him acknowledge that the
things that I write unto you are
the commandments of the Lord’.
Confronted by these words of
sacred writ, how can any man,
claiming to have a com mis non
from the living God to preach
the gospel, advocate such pei
formances on the part of wo¬
men as were recently witnessed
in a convention in this city ?
