HALE’S WEEKLY.
OFFICIAL ORCAN OF THE COUNTY.
J. N. HALT., Editor.
Hard vVords.
In speaking of the death of
Mr. Jack Walden , by freezing,
the Christian Advocate says;
11 Who killed this man? He
died not as an intentional sui¬
cide. Who then is responsible?
There can be but one answer.
The saloon-keepers of Coving¬
ton slew this man. They slew
him for money. They made a
widow of his wife for money
They made orphans of Ins chil¬
dren for money.
But we must amend our
statement at one point. There
could be no saloons in Coving¬
ton if tho town council would
refuse to issue a license. That
body, we are informed, is au¬
thorized under the town charter
to license. refuse, if they will, to issue
a These councilmen,
before God, arc accessories to
this murder hefore the fact. T*- e
tribunals of men may acquit
them of blame. But at last, as
God sees the case, they are not
free from blame.
Back of town council are the
people whose votes have made
open saloons in Covington.
They, too, are implicated in
this killing. How will they an¬
swer to God?”
These are han’t words to come
from the Advocate—as hard
and interoperate as the Advo¬
cate would have the world be¬
lieve the people of Covington
are. We are not, and have
never been the defenders of bar¬
rooms or of whiskey ; yet, we
are not of that class who brands
every man who is in any way
connected with its manufacture
or sale as a robber and a mur¬
derer. It is not by such violent
bitter, fanatical talk as the Ad
vocate indulges in that towns
and counties and states are
free from the rum curse, but by
gentle, kind, persuavive, Chris¬
tian efforts. The Advocate, no
doubt, means well, but we fear
they are doing more to keep the
saloons of Covington running
than to stop them.
Correct.
In replying to some strictures
of Dr. Edwards in the North¬
western Advocate on the people
of the South in regard to lynch¬
ing, the Christian Advocate
says:
* ( Wesuggest that our loving
brethren of the North and West
join us in trying to remove the
causo of these lyuchings. Most
of them are provoked by as¬
saults made upon women and
girls, crimes that are ten-fold
wore than death, and if we can
stop that we can stop most of
the lynching. Remove the cause
and the consequences wili end.
It is indeed remarkable that,
•with all the deep concern our
NoiUiern friends have manifes¬
ted for their erring white breth¬
ren of the South, they have
seemed to feel uo concern for
their colored brethren. They
seem anxious to save us from
the crime of lynching (for which
we thank them), but they put
forth uo effort as for as we have
seen, to save the colored people
and their victimt from the worse
orinieof these criminal assaults.
We do not understand fhis.
Perhaps the eyes ot our breth¬
ren up there are blinded. Per
haps there is at least a degree 2,,
m Oj mlnr color blindness blindness, which which ena- 0
ties them to see only the black
side *he„ they look this way.
This may be friendship for the
negro, but it is a one-sided sort
of friendship. It can not be that
they ^ are more ooneerned ^ for
the masses of the whites of

able. But are they morn con
cemed , to tbe ,
save negro
lynching than they are to save
our women and girls from the
the horrible crimes committed
on them? It looks so. We see
a great deal about the crime of
lynching and the injustice to the
poor negro; but we see nothig
at all about the more horrible
crime, and the suffering of the
poor women. ”
