The Chicago Democratic plat¬
form which Mr. Cleveland en¬
dorsed in his acceptance, and
upon which he vvas elected is
plain, so that "any school boy”
can understand, hut Mr. Cleve¬
land’s utterances for some time
past have been such that there
is doubt as to his preseut posi¬
tion, unless it be true that the
Bilvei ites are correct in saying
that he is a goldbug—for the
gold standard only. If he is still
on the platform, or if he is now
a single gold standard man there
is no use to employ the word "if”
in speaking or his position. Will
ing to give him the interpreta¬
tion of th6 words, "sound mon¬
ey,” we said “if.” Everybody
wants sound money. Some
think the way to secure this is
to advocate free silver, others
bimetallism and others a single
golu standard. The president is
opposed to free silver ; but tbe
question to be decided is he a
bimetalist or a gold nionomMal

If so the-pcople in this country
would be glad to have it explain
what the phrase, "soimd mon¬
ey" means.
Advanced womanhood socie¬
ties claiming woman’s rights and
superiorities are dissatisfied with
the Bible, and are going to write
it over. They are disgusted
with the idoi that woman was
first in tile transgression, ami
that mail should be her superioi
in anything. The Bible must be
written so as to put woman hist
iu everything good, and man
first m everything that is bad.
The government has managed
the fuiancs of the country since
the days or Washington, and
that, without the gathering ot
the masses m convention. U h>
is it usr, ossary now to have tin
minds of the whole people ngi
taied during this off year in po.
itics V Or why should this be at
all ? It looks like tbe work of
politicians laying the font.da
t, .vi this year for the rearing of
tiw tructure in’96.
Secretary Carlisle’s speech in
Co' ton, Ky., is an exhaust
ive a guuient against the free
coinug of silver. He says that
uulimited silver means the n -
tiremeut of gold, aud will thus
bring about silver monouietal
ism. This is not desirable. It
is neither gold nor silver, but
gold and silver wanted by the
country. Money as it is with
State banks of issue will stop
financial discussion, and put all
the money needed into circula¬
tion. The business of the world
will be done, and the local inter¬
ests will not suffer.

ple hurt.
The income tax was first de¬
clared partly constitutional; af¬
terward the wires put it consti¬
tutional, hut now the decision is
published, knocking out the tax
altogether.
A moonlight croquet club has
been oiganized in Jackson. The
initiation fee is 25 cents. The
young people propose to have a
good time every moonlight sea¬
son this summer.
It is said that there are over
3,000,000 bachelors in the Uni¬
ted States- Why this would
give a husband for as many
women, and then there would
he a gloat many left.
The foreign manufacturers
are complaining at the way
Georgia and South Carolina cot¬
ton is packed. It must be done
better or the price will be lessen
ed on the staple in these States.
Dr. Spalding preached the com
mencement sermon of the South
ern Baptist College, Manchester,
last Sunday. The sermon was
preacheu in 1st Baptist church
of Atlanta. The doctor dis¬
coursed upon “The Ideal Wo¬
man.”
Savannah sends a car load of
Bonn evs vo Chicago to decorate
the Confederate monument
there on May 30t.h. The car
contains 100 pine saplings, 1,000
laurel wreaths, a lot of moss and
sinilax. A thousand magnolia

wall Jackson, removed the veil
trom the statue.
In Walton county last week
the littie daughter of Robt Hig¬
gins was playing in the lot with
other children. The gate post
fell suddenly and killed the lit
tie girl almost instantly. The
falling of the post is unaccount¬
able, making tbe sad death a
mysterious one.

tion. The board of trustees de¬
clined to accept the action of
their beloved president, and post
poned action till the next meet¬
ing of the board, which occurs
iu Atlanta June 25th.
Listen what a mad editor says :
“We are mad! Darn the peo¬
ple! How can they expect us,
out here, twelve miles from a
railroad, t v 'enty-five miles from
a river, millions of miles from
heaven, about two miles from
the devil, and about two hun¬
dred yards from a whiskey shop,
to get out a lively newspaper.”
The Hartford Suu says that
a man died the other day from
licking an envelope, being poi¬
soned from tbe decayed animal
matter in the mucilage. The
Sun warns people against this
habit, whereupon the Augusta
Chronicle states that millions
have licked envelopes, and this
is the first victim on record.
The Chronicle man will contin¬
ue to lick envelopes at his own
risk.
Last Monday night Sheriff
Denham, of Montgomery coun¬
ty was shot aud killed by Con¬
nell. It was a brutal act, and
Denham’s friends determined to
he avenged. They pursued the
man to the neighborhood of Dub
lin, where he was overtaken
Wednesday morning. He resist¬
ed to the last, but was riddled
with bullets. Sheriff Denham
was a very popular man and of¬
ficer.
The Methodist church at Phil¬
adelphia, Putnam county, was
called upon to support an or¬
phan at the Decatur Orphanage,
near Atlanta. J. G. Spivey pro¬
posed tf at instead of supporting
this orphan that they help a wi
dowed mother in the neighbor¬
hood raise and educate her two
children. This was done and ev¬
erybody was happy at the de¬
cision. How much better to seek
out tbe poor of your own church,
and help them.
Miss Winnie Davis, “Daugh¬
ter of the Confederacy,” created
quite an enthusiasm as she pass¬
ed through Atlanta on Mouday
last on her way to the Houston,
Texas, reunion. Capt. West
introduced the old veterans. One
with a lost arm was so over¬
come he could not announce his
name, but Miss Davis relieved
the situation by taking with
both her hands that of the old
soldier, saying, “That armless
sleeve is sufficient introduction.”
Bota, with the observers, drop¬
ped a tear as the old man pass
on to give place for another.
A few weeks ago we publish¬
ed the report that President
Cleveland had given £500 to a
mother who had three lit tie girls
at once, and named them Ruth,
Esther and Frances. Private
Secretary Thurber denies this,
and says the president has not
given the £500, but upon the re¬
port 42 letters had been received
from mothers of twins, triplets
and quadruplets. The last let¬
ter reads as follows :
“To hid Excellency, Grover Cleveland :
Dear Kir—[ see by ihe papers that
yon just gave $500 to triplets. AVe just
had lour of a kind. They were ail
qn ens. We have named three of them
Frances, Ruth and Esther. What shall
we name the other? We thought of
naming her Groveretta, if this is satis¬
factory to you We are in poor circum¬
stances to liavo so many children at
once. Do you think you could remem¬
ber us, s you did the triplets, as we
have gone them one better ?
T ours with obedience,”
Mr. Thurber would not divulge
names, but said the letters were
a nuisance, and would be de
stroyed. One letter contained
tne following :
“Can you help us to keep our little
Grover from the grave?”
Little Grover’s father said lie
had been a Democrat all his life,
aud could get a nice little home
for £700.

MAN’S TRIUMPH.
With her cigarettes and bloomers,

I’m forced to the conclusion
That my Kate is ’most a man.
But now she geems dissatisfied,
—And though she does not know—
I have the ‘•secret in my heart”
Which my lass has guarded so.
On the s 1 y I searched her boudoir—
Everywhere—high and low—
Reward has come; I’ve found at last
The cause of Katie’s woe.
It's a large and square-cut bottle,
With a label, ’course, you know;
And on it in bold faced letters:
“Warranted the beard to grow.”
Kate’s face is drawn and haggard;
Her whiskers have not grown,
And her sleep is ever broken
Bj many a sigh and moan.
Though sweet Katie has my clothing—
All complete, from A to Z—
She has st uck the halting place—
She must let my whiskers be.
