For larger orchards or market- gar ilons the following from Secretary Mor¬ ton, United States commissioner of ag¬ riculture, cover* the ground: "Spraying to control various insect pests, particularly those of t-ho orchard and mu-don, has reached so satisfactory and inexpensive a basis that it is recog¬ nized by every progressive farmer as a aewsssary feature of the year’s opera¬ tions, ami in the case of t he apple, pear and plum crops the omission of such treatment mean* serious loss, The consequent demand for spraying appa¬ ratus has been met by all the lauding pump manufacturers of this country, and ready-fitted apparatus, consisting of pump, spray tank or barrel, and n'oszle with hot a, are on the market in numerous styles at prices ranging from ;J20 upward. Assweu ,5 --This question of spray is no longer a matter of choice, hat of uBOessity. The presence of fungus diseases and insect pests is the main cause of disappointment in our fruit crops, and also of the early decay oi orchards, which should continue in bearing for an iudoftuita period. The value of theso spraying remedies has been so clearly demonstrated by tiie #xpsrim?«t stations aud by individual tests of large fruit- growers that wo can no longer doubt their expediency or economy. Iu fighting these pests the warfares must b> aggressive as well as defensive, and should have been inaug¬ urated earlier ia rha season; bat it is not yet too late to use some of the rem edies which I give below.
