It is claimed that oils and fats may
not only be bleached but sweetened
and purified generally by treating
them with an electric current.
Under the streets of New York City
there are over $3,000,000 worth of
cojrper in the shape of wires and cable
put down by one company alone.

One of our Consuls at Rheims,
France, describes a new process for
preserving fruits. They are to be
kept in an atmosphere saturated with
water and alcohol and will resist de¬
cay for many months.
The ballooon, by means of which
M. Andree, the Swedish engineer, will
endeavor to reach the North Pole, will
it is said, be capable of carrying three
persons, four months’ provisions, a
sledge and a sailing boat, and will be
sufficiently gas-tight to hover in the
air for thirty days.
Beautiful photographs of the bot¬

taken by a Frenchman, who uses a

glass globe containing an alcohol lamp,
a mechanical contrivance throwing
magnesium powder on the flame when
a view is to be taken.
Paper sails are a recent invention.
The paper is subjected to a process,
whence it issues in sheets of the usual
width and thickness of cotton duck.
These sheets are cemented and riveted
together so as to form a smooth, strong
seam. The sails are said to be light,
durable, elastic and airtight.
The Wood Beetle’s Destructiveness.
The little boring wood beetle at¬
tacks books and will even bora
through several volumes. An instance
is mentioned of twenty-seven folio
volumes being perforated iu a straight
line by one and the same insect, in
such a manner that by passing a cord
through the perfect round hole made
by it, the twentv-seven volumes could
be raised at once.
It also destroys prints and drawings
whether framed or kept in a folio.
These poor insects have no conception
of the value of anything they may
destroy. Any common trash of close¬
ly packed paper would suit them just
as well, but in their ignorance they
are destroyers of that which is of
value to the world. They have their
imitators among humanity.

Economy.
It is a duty to be economical. At
the great feeding of the 5,000 from
bread, miraculously furnished, the
Christ commanded that all the frag¬
ments be saved. He was more careful
than many a servant who will throw
away slices of good bread and many a
slatternly housekeeper who will let
bread mould, rather than take care of
it, although, the household provider
may be breaking his back and heart in
trying to keep the wolf from the door;
but the Lord of all who could produce
bread by the ton with a prayer, saved
all the pieces. Economy is a duty, a
very important duty; it should be
taught to all and be practiced by all.

Timely Warning.
The great success of the chocolate preparations of
the house of Walter Baker & Co. (established
in 1780) has led to the placing on the market
many misleading and unscrupulous imitations
of their name, labels, and wrappers. Walter
Baker 8& Co. are the oldest and largest manu¬
facturers of pure and high-grade Cocoas and
Chocolates on this continent. No chemicals are
FI used in their manufactures.
Consumers should ask for, and be sure that
they get, the genuine Walter Baker 8c Co.’s goods.

germ=life
The doctors tell us, now-a-days, that disease germs
are everywhere; in the air, in the water, in our food,
clothes, money; that they get into our bodies, live
there, thrive and grow, if they find anything to thrive on.
Consumption is the is destruction of lung-tissue by
germs where the lung too weak to conquer them.
The remedy is strength—vital force.
Scott’ s Em ulsion, with hypophosphites, means the
adjustment of lung strength to overcome germ-life.
It is fighting the germ with the odds in our favor.
These tiny little drops of fat-food make their way
into the system and re-fresh; and re-invigorate it.
Whether you succeed with it or not depends on how
good a start the germs had, and how carefully you can
live. The shortest way to health is the patient one.
The gain is often slow.

The Gramophone.
The gramophone, a talking machine,
much simpler and cheaper than the
phonograph, invented by Dr. Berliner,
the famous electrician, will soon be
put upon the market. Its record of
human speech and of music, it is said,
are indestructible, and can bo cheaply
multiplied to an indefinite extent by
simple mechanical means. What it has
to say or sing can be heard all over an
ordinary-sized house. So devoid of
complexity is its construction that the
complete apparatus will cost only $18,
and a smaller edition intended for the
use of children will be sold for $5.
