Tiic administration of Gov.
W.Y. A;kmso!i appeals to ev
e» v patriotic and intelligent vo¬
ter in the Gate and is enough
within itself to keep him in chief
executive harness four years
more.
Congre-sman Livingston is as
fat and rosy as you please and
enjoys peaceful slumber night
after night despite the many
aspirants for his berth in the
House.
Hon. Steve Clay is now de¬
voting his entire time io the
const:\ut!y ir.ct. using exactions
of the campaign. He can al¬
ways be found at democratic
headquarters.
The W ly is with the dem
ocratic prasy. Couyers
Rockdale.
Hon.Seab Wright’s guberna¬
torial aspirations will lead him
into one of the greatest snow
storms he ever beheld about
0 oher 7, 1890.
Hon. Hoke Smith has resign¬
ed the secretaryship of the In¬
terior to make room for one of
Mr, Cleveland’s pet gold bugs.
Mr. Smith has to a large extent
himself with his peo
pie because of this action, The
very least that can be said is
that be is loyal to bis party.
It is said that the prohibition

Hon. W C. Adamson, of
Carrollton, has been nominated
for Congress by the fourth dis¬
trict democrats. It is safe to
say that Judge Adamson will
represent the fourth iu the Fif
ty-fith Congress.
And Willie Pollard Breckin¬
ridge is too pure, he says, to
support Bryan! Ho has the
effrontery of the devil.—Spar¬
ta Ishmaelite.
It is liigh time the democrats
of Rockdale were organizing
and making ready for battle.
It is necessary that clubs be
formed in every district in the
county, and let the campaign
be pushed with system and pre.
cision and a brilliant victory
will bo ours.
Senator Gordon will be invi¬

Peek Nominated.
The populist congressional
convention met in Atlanta last
and nominated Hon.
W. L. Peek, of our county, tor
Congress from this dis riefc.
Tbe fight in the convention was
between Peek and Cobb. The
vote was 12£ for the former, 9A
the latter and 1 for Black
burn.
Since the action of the con
the ... . being •
vention questions are
asked: , - Iv ill Cobb come ou .

< ol. Peek is a mighty good
man and highly esteemed in his
home county.
That interesting South Caro¬
lina campaign will have to be
run again, Governor Evans
fai'ed of election and there is
grave doubt as to the result in
the next race.
Hon. R. H. Camion, demo¬
cratic nominee for the legisla¬
ture, is entering the campaign
with an earnestness and effect¬
iveness that would de credit to a
veteran politician, It is his
avowed intention to win.
Sewall is the sc antiest talker
on the American continent. ‘A

built the other way.
Tom Cobb’s populist grand
stand play didn’t work, He
forgot that Georgia populists
are ‘middle-of-the-roaders. ’
Hon. Seab Wright will bo
prepared to attend his usual
routine professional duties af¬
ter Octoper 7. He is just now
taking his little prorata of pop¬
ulist lung exercise.
Scott Thornton has abandon¬
ed politics and will return to
his first love—the stage, Bo¬

of Scott’s dramatic tastes and
capabilities.
Deserved Compliment.
The grand jury of DeKalb
county Superior court contains
in its general presentments the
following deserved compliment
to Judge Candler and Solicitor
general Kirasey: -
“It affords us the greatest
pleasure to state that the course
upon the bench of our esteemed
fellow-ci'izen, the Hon. Jno. S.
Candler, meets with our un¬
qualified approbation, and we
feel assured that we but voice
the sentiment of our people
large, when we say : that Judge
Candler’s services have come at
a most opportune time, when
the prompt dispatch of busi¬
ness, and the great benefit to
the taxpayers resulting there¬
from can be so thoroughly ap¬
preciated. We arc aware of the
fact that Judge Candler has al¬
ready saved our county hun¬
dreds of dollars in costs-by his
prompt and efficient dispatch
of the business of the court. and
feel that the heavy burden of
taxation will be greatly lesseued
in the future, if we are so for¬
tunate as to have his services
continued to us for the next
four years. We not only feel
that Judge Candler course meets
with the approval of every one
of our citizens, but that he has
made himself universally popu¬
lar throughout this circuit, and
that a failure of the legislature
to elect him for 'he full term
would be nothing short of a
public calamity
in this connection we com
mend the efficient service of our
Solicitor General, \Y. T. Kim
sev, courteous, brave and
prompt. He is of great value)
to us iu the prompt dispatch of j
the business before this court.” ‘
Declination.
In reply to a- challenge from
Hon, J. P. Elder, populist nom
inee for state senate from this
district, for a joint discussion in
the various counties of the dis
tnct, Dr. J. A. Stewart, the
democratic neminee, says ;
Conyers, Aug. 18. 18SG.
Ool. J. P. Elder, Elder, Ga
My Dear Sir:—Yours of the
13th inst- is in band asking me
to discuss the 1 political ideas
. the people , ot . the
now agitating people
state. I think the are
lip U p on the democratic
platform of the country and
they understand my position.
I do not think that a joint dis¬
cussion would be of any benefi t
to the people of the district at
this time, therefore, I respect¬
fully decline to discuss the po¬
litical issues, now before the
people, in debate, as they will
be discussed all over the state
by abler debaters than myself.
Yours respectfully.
J. A. Stewart.
As will be seen from the above,
which ve nublish as a matter
of news, Dr. Stewart declines to
join Mr. Eider in a discussion of
political questions, and it is ob¬
vious that the Dr. is preemi¬
nently wise in his decision. It
is known of all men that the
Dr. stands upon the democratic
platform and it is equally as
well known that the populists
charge the democrats with steal¬
ing their platform, When we
consider these two facts it is
plain that a debate between
these two gentlemen would not,
as Dr. Stewart suggests, be of
any benefit to the people.
The Dr. was wise to decline.
Excursion.
The farewell excursion to
Milledgeville and return, for
the season of ’96, will be run
on Thursday, September 3rd,
and the round trip from Con¬
yers will cost only $1.29. Chil¬
dren half fare.
Special train will leave At¬
lanta at 8 a. m., returning
leave Milledgeville at 7 p, m.
This excursion is run at the re¬
quest of parties who failed to
go on our business men’s ex¬
cursion in August, and will be
personally conducted by offi¬
cials of the Middle Georgia &
Atlantic Railway Co. There
are hundreds of objects in and
around Milledgeville that will
well repay a visit.
This excursion will be run on
the same high plan that has
made our excursions so suc¬
cessful and popular.
To our colored patrons we
guarantee the same fair treat¬
ment that they have heretofore
received. Ho intoxicants will
be sold on the train, or vicious
and obnoxious people permit¬
ted to go.
M. R. Hudson,' Gen’1. Pass. Agt.

arraign the party’s candidates.
