ABSOLUTELY PURE
Jefferson’s Masterpiece.
When the time came for the
people of the thirteen united
colonies to proclaim to the world
that they were free and that
they held themselves absolved
from all allegiance to the
British crown, and that all
political connection between
them and great Britain was
totally dissolved, a committee
of the Continental Congress
was appointed to draw up a
Declaration of Independence.
The members of this committee
were Benjamin Franklin, of
Pennsvlvaia; John Adams of
Massachusetts; Roger Sherman,
of Oonnectieutt; Robert Livings¬
ton, ofNew York, and Thomas
Jefferson, of Virginia., Why
was it that their colleagues
committed' the writing of the
Declaration of Indepecdance to
Thomas Jefferson and not to
Benjarnan Franklin. The Vir¬
ginian was not the most promi¬
nent man < u of his own sec¬
tion, and, although his reputa¬
tion could uot be fairly termed
local, it was but little more,
while the name of the Pennsyl¬
vanian was well known through
out the whole civilized world.
Franklin was not only the fore¬
most citizen of Philadtlphia.
where the Congress was sitting ;
lie was the most accomplished
man of letters in all the tbirteou
colonies, and ho was especially
equipped for the drawing up of
an appeal to Europe, as he had
but just returned from London,
where ha had been pleading the
cause of bis countrymen with
indomitable courage and indis¬
putable skill, says Harper’s
Magazine. Vet Franklin was
not asked to write the Declara¬
tion of Independence, and al¬
though lie and Adams made a
few verbal amendments, the
credit of that great statement
belongs to Jefferson, and why
was it that this vesponsiblity
was placed on Jefferson and not
on Franklin?—Ex.

Only Eight Month’s Old.
The most extraordinary in¬
fant ever born has just died in
St. Louis, Mo., and has left a
trail of marveling scientists to
try to figure out some plausible
explanation of a phenomenon
of the like of which there is no
record.
The accepted cause of the ba¬
by’s death is in itself a para¬
dox. Death was described as
the result of senile debility, yet
the little one only began to live
eight months before.
Dr. Edward Randall, a well
known St. Louis physician, con¬
nected with the north side dis¬
pensary in that city, was treat¬
ing the infant, who was the son
of a Mississippi river fisherman
named Enoch Burch, living on
the outskirts of the city.
When Dr. Randall first saw
the child he noticed that there
were many things ° about the
case decidedly , .. out ot the com
mon, The body was that of an
ordinary infant, and all the or
gans seemed healthy. The head
however, was extraordinary in |
many respects. In size it was
that of an adult, and each sue
tensive day accentuated its ex¬
ternal
The thickness and texture of
the hair gave the infant the ap¬
pearance of a grown man, and
on the baby’s face there
grew with amazing thickness a
silky beard. All the features
developed correspondingly fast,
and on the countenance there
gradually settled an expression

Why We Cry.
Populism are continually admon¬
ishing democrats not to abuse or
mistreat them intimating that by
kiucl treatment they might be won
back. The policy of kindness and
yielding to their wishes has seemed
to be the course of the democratic
party for the last two years, but the
populists continue to fight against,
oppose, and accuse democrats of all
kinds of dishonesty, unfairness and
fraud—and to procure the offices
which they hold.
This reminds us of the little five
year old who was playing with his
jounger brother, and now and then
would whack him over the head with
a small mallet. The cries of the
cries of the little one reached the
mother who inquired the cause,
when the elder one called out, “Ma,
I wish you would make Bill behave
himself, every time [ hit him over
the head with the mallet he just
hollos.” ,
Now, if you expect us to quiet you
must quit hitting us on the head with
the mallet,—DeKalb New Era
