New Adds.
We print several new adver¬
tisements in this issue and if
the thermometer hadn’t regis¬
tered so low the probability W
that we v ould ll«vv e 6ec uii;d
several Q ur merchants,
as a rule, believe in advertising.
A few of them claim that they
are already doing more business
than they wish to and of course
we don’t expect them to further
strive.
The Weekly seeks to build
up the town and county and
would he glad to have , every
business represented in its
columns, but one can never
have everything wished for.
Read our advertisements and
conferWith the advertisers and
ypu.are.suie to be profited. The
man who advertises will always
give you a better trade than
one vvho does not, for lie is ev
er seeking your patronage.
Editor Hawkins, of the Cov¬
ington Enterprise, thinks the
Constitution's reference to the
proposed public building at
that place, was an injustice to
the town and really unkind in
the great daily , and intimates
that a retraction would be ap
preciated'by his town and peo¬
ple. While ILawkitis is talking
in dead earnest about the new
building Editor-Gu8 Morrow, of
The Jonesboro Enterprise, is
treating tlie matter in the fol¬
lowing light manner:
“While Your Uncle Leoni¬
das is working to obtain an ap¬
propriation for a federal prison
at- Covington be must not for¬
get that Jonesboro wants a cus¬
tom bouse, and that his fences
around here will need attention
if he fails to get it.”
Thus it is that our sister city
and Congressman Livingston
are being smiled at.
The Cuban insurgents are
said to be fighting so near Ila
vanna that the smoke of battle
may be seen from the house
tops. This must be getting un¬
comfortably close for Weyler.
Many of Congressman Liv
ingstou’s constituents received
seeds through the post office
here this morning.
McKinley has about comple¬
ted his cabinet and Maj. Ham
son, of Macon, is not 'in it.’
Mayor Collier, of Atlanta,
is cutting both “going and com¬
ing.” He proposes to practice
the most rigid economy in the
admihist ration of that city Y
affairs this year.

Many cn the Road.
The country is full of tramps
and the mimher of them is ap¬
parently on the increase.
The peculiar thing about
them is that they are all crip¬
pled in some way and wear
crutches. It is said that this
is a scheme they have adopted
to inspire sympathy and pro¬
voke a mere universal charity.
The crutches are brought into
active play while the “Weary
Wide” is on his round of beg
ging and until he is well out of
town when it is transferred to
the shoulder and the natural
walk resumed.
A permanent camp was es¬
tablished a short distance below
town by a party of these indif
ferent tourists some weeks agr
and was ^gnSkintly occupied
Halil the owner of the laud up¬
on which it was built destroyed
it by-fire.
This lodging place was con¬
structed of many cross ties piled
upon each other to a considera¬
ble heighth in a circle, The
cracks were well chiuked with
pine straw and grass with a
heavy covering of the same up¬
on the floor. When finished it
made a safe and comfortable
abode in any' kind of weather,
A lot of cord-wood, stacked
close by, was used unstintedly
and it was a warm time the
jWillie’s” had when they stop¬
ped at their country inn.
The great number of aimless
wanderers at this time is being
remarked upon by the people
and the idea seems to prevail
that is not an indication of re¬
turning prosperity. To what¬
ever cause may be due their
visits certain it is that to aid
them all as they request would
bankrupt an-average, citizen in
a very short time.
In this connection it might
be well to warn the people con¬
cerning these migratory charac¬
ters, So many of them are a
round of late our town will be
fortunate indeed should it es¬
cape the seige without suffer¬
ing some depredation at the
hands of the army .
After an absence of several
years I have returned to Con¬
yers. I didn’t come back to
idle my time away, but for the
express purpose of doing bus¬
iness. I am loco ted on Center
street in the store‘lately occu¬
pied by Mr. C. W. Smith and
I iuvite a!! of my old friends
and the people generally to
ME.
I carry a stock of general
merchandise and I would espe¬
cially call your attention to the
fact that I am closing out a
nice new stock of shoes at ab¬
solute wholesale cost. Also a
line of fine Dress Goods, Silks,
Velvets and Notions going
Of ki

Relic of Getysburg.
As is well known “uncle’
John Taylor was quite an ac¬
tive participant in the “late un¬
pleasantness'’ between the
States, and can tell some very
interesting stories in connection
with that unparallelled struggle..
After regaling us with the nar
ralion of several thrilling inci¬
dents relative to the hftUhT of
that he
had a relic of that fight and
would show it to us. He step¬
ped over to his room and soon
returned with a little hand mir¬
ror in a wooden frame. Its shape
is rather obloug than round and
was covered, when found, by
a lirl attached to a small brass
post or brad in the top of the
frame. He picked this mirror
up after the battle while the
field was yet covered with the
dead and wounded. He has
been careful to preserve this
glass, perhaps, not because he
is fond of looking at himself
but because of the associations
that surround it in his memo

Conyers a Business Town.
That Conyers is a number
one business town we suppose
every ono admits, but does ev¬
ery one rightly appreciate the
fact? We fear that until some
of our wide-awake business men
chance to be burned for a sea¬
son in some really dead place
they will be uu able to fully ap¬
preciate the merits of Conyers
as a business town.
Only a few days ago a letter
was received by a citizen of this
place, from his son in another
town and the young man, in
speaking of the business merits
of the town as compared to
Conyers, placed the figures at
about “16 to 1;” that is, Con¬
yers does vastly more business
than the other town.
The town in question is only
a few miles removed from us
and enjoys equal advantages
with Conyers. It is the capitol
of a large and piosperous coun¬
ty and should be a good busi¬
ness town.
The secret of the whole mat¬
ter rests id the fact that our peo¬
ple are progressive and wide-a¬
wake in all tlieir business af¬
fairs and long ago determined
to keep in the front rank. The
result has been the advent of a
vigorous and healthy competi¬
tion in all lines of trade that
has been worth thousands of
dollars to the farmers of this
and surrounding counties, every
year. Our merchants get trade
from a great field and sell stacks
of goods every day at prices so
low as to attract attention even
beyond neighboring towns.
More cotton was brought to
this market the past season than
for several. Good prices were
paid and it was brought here
from the very doors of surroun¬
ding towns. This is another
great item iu. favor of the town
and aids materially in building
a trade reputation.
As we have repeatedly de¬
clared so may we agaiu assert
that some of the best business
men in Georgia are right right
here in Conyers and their rep¬
utation for clean business deal¬
ing and legitimate profit is ex¬
tending throughout the
try.
