Strange Death,
Below will be fonnd an ac¬
count of the sad and untimely
death of Mr. J. T. Bruce, lie
was familiarly known to our
people tis Tuhibt Bruce, Hi
early boyhood and young man¬
hood was spent in Conyers. JJe
was the onh son of Mr. John A.
Bruce, who spent many years
J in this place. Iu his boyhood
days Mr. Bruce was rather dis¬
posed to be of a lively, cheerful
and sporting character, loved
fun and frolic, but as he ma¬
tured into manhood he betoak
himself studiously to books.
: When about grown he entered
upon the preparatory studies
for a Presbyterian minister. He
was amply- equipped for the
worthy calling selected. His
ministerial career, however, was
not without many draw backs
The different Presbytei’ies to
which he belonged supported
him with tender and brotherly
feelings of regret and sympathy
until finally, only a few years
ago, he was deposed as a min¬
ister.
Mr. Bruce was warm hearted,
tender and true to friends: for¬
giving and patient to the un¬
fortunate. His whole life seem¬
ed to be clouded with an ail¬
ment that proved destructive to
his usefulness and to his life.
The facts as taken from the
Atlanta Journal follow;
“The body of Rev. J. T. Bruce
was found yesterday morning in
Lanette, lyingin asmall
cokl in death. Mr. Brucecatne
here from Newnan last
day afternoon, arriving about
4 :45 p. in. He took a room m
the Chattahoochee House and
about 9 oclock that night, left
his room and passing through
the office, where he was seen by
several persons, left the hotel
and was not seen again until
his dead body was found yester¬
day morning.
No marks of violence was
found upon the body, and no
foul play is suspected, j His
gold watch was iu his vest
pocket, and his pocket book
contained a $5 bill, one silver
dollar and some small change.
Those who saw Mr. Bruce
leave the hotel say that be was
very much under the influence
of liquor. It is supposed 'that,
he went out for a stroll. About
half a mile from the hotel he
left the road and was going
along a path running through
an old field of pines. It seems
that in the darkness he wan¬
dered from the path which
crossed the branch a few yards
below the place where his body
was found. The rains had
washed out a small hole where
he attempted tocross the branch
and on the opposite bank was a
thick briar patch. It appears
from tracks on the opposite side
and the trampled briars, that he
got across and becoming entan¬
gled in the biiars turned to re
cross the brook and fell into the
washout. The bole is quite
shallow, the banks being not
more than 12 inches high and
the water not more than 10
i :ches deep.
Prints of his knees and elbows
on the banks show that he tried
io scramble out but in his help¬
less condition was unable to ex¬
tricate himself.
When found, the body was
lying partly on the back, the
face out of water and the eves
closed.
Mr. Bruce was a well known
Presbyterian minister. He was
for some years pastor of the 1
Presbyteriau church at West!
Point, and was well and favor¬
ably kuowu here. From West
Point he went to La Grange to
accept the pastorate of the
church there and later accepted
a call at Eufaula. Ala.
He was connected with some
of the best families in the state.
For several years he has been
traveling in the inherest of a
publishing house.
Mr. Bruce was widely and
favorably known as a man and
as a preacher, and he has many
friends In Georgia and elsewhere
who will be grieved to hear of
his tragic death.
