jpjRy PRESENTMENTS
We, the Grand Jurors chosen
and sworn for the April term of
Rockdale Superior court, beg
leave to make the following gen¬
eral present ments.
PAUPER FARM.
We find at the pauper farm four
inmates, three white and one -col¬
ored. The paupers are well cared
for by the present keeper, Mr.
Berry* Alniand. We find the ex¬
panses of the farm for the past
six months to be $81.47. L T p to
Feb. 1st, ’97, there were seven in¬
mates. Since that time they have
reduced to four. The average ex¬
penses pier month $13.58; the ex¬
penses for each inmate per month
$2.27.
We recommend that the Ordi¬
nary* have the barn moved to a
more suitable and convenient lo¬
cation. We think the piresent
keeper has done his duty in every
respiect.
COUNTY OFFICERS.
We find the books of the vari
ous county* officers neatly and cor
rectly kept-, so far as we are able
to judge.
We find the books of the Just
ices and Notary Publics kept as
Die law requires.
Wc fi n d that the druggists keep
a record of all poisonous drugs
so ] ( )
AVe find from the County* School
Commissioner’s books that there
were j n opperation in the county
p, ygqq thirty-eight schools—20
white ond jg colored; fifty-five
teachers, 34 white and 21 colored;

rUBLIC BUILDINGS.
W= find the court house in fair
ly good condition with the ex
( ception of a few broken glasses
alK l leaks in the roof, which have
j ! caused some breaks in the plas
jering, all of which tv e reeom
, mend the Ordinary have repaired.
! We find our bridges in good
| condition, except the bridge a
! cross Yellow river at Gee’s mill.
; which the Ordinary now has un-
1 der consideration.
Wo have examined the vari
ous reports of the road commis
| sioners filed of the clerk’s office
for 1896 and find they have ful
j discharged their duties . as
Road Conmi is doners, and we
reommend that the charge a
gainst them be dismissed .
The roads at this time are in
as good condition as cotnd )e
j expected on account of the ex
Icessive rains, and we recom¬
mend that .they put in good or¬
der as soon as it can he done,
taking into consideration the
delayed farming interest, espec¬
ially the road leading to the Ir¬
win bridge and the road leading
to Paper Mill and the road lead¬
ing from J. W. Almand’s to
Ebenezer Church.
We recommend the Ordinary
have the washout repaired and
the public road leading from
Union church by the way of
Mr. N. J. Bonds. .
We recommend the Ordinary
be paid one hundred and seven¬
ty and 25-100 dollars for ser¬
vices rendered the county for
which there is no fee’s provided
for.
We recommend that the Or¬
dinary levy such a per cent of
the taxable property as will
raise the sum of $4,500.00 for
County purposes. For jury
purposes $1,800.00, Paupers
$800.00 .
We recommend that the Ordi¬
nary order an election to he
held July, 22 1897, for the pur¬
pose of issuing Bonds to the a
mount of ten thousand dollars,
or such other atnquut as may be
necessary for the purpose of
paying for the new jail and
liquidating the present indebt¬
edness of the county, and said
bonds to be retired in ten years
by annual payments, or such
plans as he may think best.
The Ordinary has gone for¬
ward under the recommenda¬
tion of the Grand Jury and con¬
tacted for a new Jail at a cost
of $4,500, and the work will be¬
gin soon.
We recommend that the jail
committee be paid two dollars
per day for their services.
We thank Judge Candler in
behalf of our tax payers for the
prompt maimer in which he ox.
peditesthe business of his court,
and behalf of all law abiding
citizens for the able manner in
which he enforces the criminal
law of the state.
