since this list of officers and
privates was placed on record in
the little book. Great changes
iave occurred since that time
md should the muster roll be
revised again to-day a wonder¬
ful depletion in its numbers
would be shown.
Some time in 1864, if we
mistake not, Sergt. Almand was
drought from Camp Near, Har¬

here where he lived only a

The little book contains also
some record of purchases made.
For instance, Sergt. Almand
paid, on Aug.“10,, 1800, $1 for
a plate of pie
On the 24th of the same
month he paid $1 for a dozen
corn and on the 29th one pound
of soda cost him $4.50.
. On the fly leaf of the little
memoranda lie had written
down some moral rules, which,
if they governed his conduct,
must have made him, indeed, a
model young man.

Fifty Years ‘Ago.
Thir. is llie way it was bound to look
When grandfather had his “picter took*”
These were the shadows cast before
The coming of Conjurer Daguerre
And his art; like a girl-in a pinafore
Some day to bloom to a goddess fair.
Men certainly were not as black, we know
As tiiey pictured'them, 50 years ago.
Ayer’s Sarsaparilla
began to make new men, just
as the new pictures of men
began to be made. Thousands
of people fronted the camera,
with skins made clean from
blotch and blemish, because
they had purified the blood
with Ayer’s Sarsaparilla.. It
is as powerful now as then.
Its record proves it. Others
imitate the remedy ; they
can’t imitate the record:
