The Weekly desires to assure
the farmers of this and adjoin¬
ing counties that Conyers is
one of tho best cotton markets
in tho State and that she will
maintain her reputation this
season without let or hindrance.
Rockdale is a small county
and Conyers a small town, but
“we are the people” and you
will lose nothing by corning to
Conyers with your cotton. The
market that gives you most is
tho market you seek—try Con¬
yers once and you will come
again.
I {<‘1 (or rilin g
If all (hat is printed concern
ing the supply of cotton at the
time the new crop entered the
market is true, then it appears
to us that better times should
not bo long in reaching herein
tho guise of better prices for
the staple. It is said that there
was hardly a weeks supply of
old cotton on hand when the
new crop appeared. Add to
this tho statement that tlio crop
is damaged 10 percent and you
will surely partake of our opin¬
ion that there is good cause for
an advance in tho price of cot¬
ton. Should this advance oc¬
cur then it h that we will enjoy
the advent of better times.
A hope for such better times
is pleasant to entertain when
born of reasonable cause and
we have that cause now.
THE FARMER’S REC¬
ORD MANAGERS.
The Weekly has had noth¬
ing to say concerning tho trans¬
actions of the Record Co - , in
this and adjoining counties,
first, because tho .business ap¬
peared to In: perfectly legitimate
as well as a most prolitablo one.
The Record is generally ac¬
knowledged to ho a valuable
publication and if properly kept
would assuredly prove of vast
benefit to any farmer.
Had we foreseen that tho 10
odd citizens’ now managers,
were to contribute some ten
thousand dollars to the compa¬
ny in payment for the privi¬
lege of selling these Records we
would have undobtedly sug¬
gested to them the advisability
of further and more critical
investigation as lb the prolits to
accrue. But like the 10, we
knew not of the vast scheme to
dispose of county rights until
the deal was made and the ob¬
ject was accomplished.
In the second place, we said
nothing ot the transaction for a
reason most abvious.
people had been relieved ot
some ten thousand dollars • It
was money the people tould

partially, destroyed ibis pros¬
pect.
Now., out of the forty or more
managers created here those
remaining in the field, or those
who may be said to he succeed¬
ing in the sale of the Record
can he numbered upon the fin¬
gers of one hand, All tho
others have apparently made
utter failures and they are now
engaged in bewailing the day
they subsribed their name to
the $270,00 note and seeking a
remedy by which they can es¬
cape the loss. If the effort
inaugurated here hast Saturday
is pushed, the fight, in our'opin¬
ion, is destined to be a strong
one and the result doubtful.
Rumley & Co., worked a
smoothe scheme. It is claimed
that in some instances misrep¬
resentation played a part and in
others the managers, to be, were
not let ou to all the facts.
Those managers who are doing
well arc making no ‘‘kick’’ bi t
they are vastly in the minority.
Those who have not done well
ate preparing to fight the Com¬
pany .
The Week by considers that
these gentlemen made unwise
invesinents-invesmeuts in which
they were not capacitated to do
the work required to win suc¬
cess. As to the methods used
m inducing these men to pur¬
chase these managers’ positions
we have no knowledge, but un¬
less a plain case of cheating
and swindling can be made out
the fight must he a loosing one
for the managers.
It is an unfortunate affiar.
The sum of money involved is
a considerable one, and we
would be glad if these gentle¬
men could recover it, but the
papers have passed into the
hands of iunoeent parties, all
the managers do not claim
fraud, some of them are doing
well, and it will be a hard
matter for the managers to win
out.
At the present time it would
be out of the question for any¬
body to correctly foresee just
how the case would terminate
Wo understand that lawyers
have been employed bv some
of the managers.

Conyers is a splendid cotton
market and the "fact” lias reach¬
ed McDonough and worries ed¬
itor Fouche no little. He un¬
wittingly publised the “facts 11
and now he is engaged in try
to undo his work. He has
unintentionally injured his town
as a cotton market and not on¬
ly he, but the merchants of his
town know it and are trying to
remedy the evjj.
McDonough is a good town —
many good people live there,
hut that don’t make it a good
cotton market. She don’t do
enough business—she hasn’t
the real live, hustling, business
men that Conyers has and she
is not expected to equal us in
any particular.
Brother Fouche is himself a
clever gentleman, but he is not
a cotton buyer and however
much lie may with to, lie can¬
not increase the cotton receipts
in McDonough by constantly
advertising in his paper the su¬
perior advantages of Conyers
over his town in the matter of
buying cotton.
In the meantime Conyers is
receiving stacks of cotton daily
and much of it comes from the
good old county of Henry.
