A practical test of the value of
advertising was made by a grocer
ill the State ofKansas. He lias two
stores in the snmo eitv Their
stocks are identical, the prices are
the same and both were doing a
bout the ^uut‘ amount of Lueiness.
He began advertising cue of the
stores, and found in a short tune
that it did twice the trade >f the
other. People would drive past

Fighting in the Pkillippines has
been resumed and from the casual¬
ties reported within tbo past few
days it has been of a fast and fur¬
ious kind. There is no doubt in the
mind of a thinking man but that
this Phillippine warfare will last
just so long as the present policy
of our government exists There
is no way to end a fight so long as
one party fights and“runs away,”
and this is part of the tactics of
tlif Phillippine insurgent.
As yet there has been nothing
said-by Uncle Sam looking to the
repeal of the law requiring the use
of revenue stamps on all legal doc¬
uments etc. This is a tiresome as
well as expensive luxury forced
upon an unwilling people.
The allied forces are again en¬
gaged in lighting in China. There
is no telling just where this con¬
glomerated warefare will end.

Marietta Institute.
The Marietta Institute, the edu¬
cational adjunct to the city under
the priucipalship of Mr. G. T..
Clotfelter, has a future which por¬
tends bright success. On a decid¬
edly short notice and without any
great amount of exertion Mr, Clot¬
felter secured an enrollment of 70
pupils of the city, the most of
whom are advanced in the higher
branches of text books and are do
ing work done in the sub-freslunen
classes of our colleges.

its promoter. Mr. Clotfelter is a
deserving young man, who has
made a splendid record as a pre¬
