The lobi-.y failed.
The Atlanta Constitution, November 7,
19SS, said editorially of this scheme.
“it compares favorably for rascality
with anything wc have had in Georgia
since the day of the fraudulent bonds.

The Atlanta Constitution, under date of
Nov : dicr 28, 1S86, says In an editorial
headed:
“THL INVESTIGATING COMMITTEE.
“He, James P. Harrison, swore before
the committee that he—state printer at
the time—paid L, F. Livingston $30 to use
his influence before Governor Henry D.
McDaniel to have a man appointed capi¬
tol commissioner who would favor his
marble scheme, ...... He scdected Livingston,
he swore, because he thought Governor
M Daniel was under obligations to him
for hi:? nomination.
“M e cannot call to mind in the* history
cf the slate a more disreputable contes
sion than is contained in the statement
above alluded to.
“Livingston, for two days’ work, because
Major Crane died on the 13th day,of Jan¬
uary and Captain E. P. Howell was ap¬
point- i on the nth of January, was paid
$30 to use his supposed influence for tbs
appointment of anybody that would be
favorable to Harrison’s marble.
“As might be supposed, Livingston se¬
lect--J his brother-in-law, Beatie, as any
man would.” * * *
“We repeat what we have said that
there has been no more disreputable work
in the lobby of the legislature since the
days of reconstruction.”
It was from this editorial that Living
ston got the nick name, “The Thirty-Dol
lur Statesman.”
