Messrs S. W. Davidson A to.,
Gainesville, Ga.
Dear Sirs: Your favor of 21st to hand, and in answer to your questions will simp.y tell you
what I did with the Oshorne Mowers. In the first place, it takes the- very best machine to cut a Ber¬
muda sod end cut it to the ground, and having had some experience with Bermuda grass before I came
down hero, and seeing the McCormick machines fail to cut it, I invited the Wood people, the Osborne
people and the Deering people to bring their machines and I would give each a fair and impartial trial
in my meadow. They all came and had llie very best in their shop, and I handh-d each one myse'f
with the same team and under the same conditions. I unhesitatingly say the Osborne gave me the best
satisfaction, and I bought two of them. The points of merit that 1 claim for the Osborne are: that
they will cut closer to the ground with less friction on the cutter-bar thereby saving the extra draft on
the team. There is no neck-weight on the team while the machine is in motion, to chafe and make sore.
The draft is much lighter, and the convenience in handling the cutter-bar with the foot lever to raise
it over obstacles, and sit in a natural position is a great help to the driver and machine, because in
turning you have the free use of your hands in controlling your team, and at the same time you save the
strain on the machine in the turn. I consider the greatest advantage in the makeup of the Osborne
is in the instant motion of the blades. When you start your machine you don’t have to baek your
team to give the blade time to get up motion. On the first motion of the wheels the knife starts and
never chokes or clogs. Then you can cut anything in the shape of grass from 0in. to 6 ft. high and
not pull your team to death. I have used my mowers more than a,man Would usually or ordinari¬
ly use Tile in five years, and I have the same blades in good shape, and in cutting over about 500
acres of meadow (some of it heavy weeds) 1 did not have a break-down, and the mowers are now read,
y to cut the same land again. I have prepared a good deal more land and expect to buy several more
in the summer. I consider the Osborne Mower by far the best mower I ever saw, and the durability
is all a reasonable man could ask. Come down in May and I will show you something worth seeing.
I have bought me an Osborne Binder, and may have two or three running in the same field. My pros¬
pects now are very good for a grain crop, ai d I would be very g'ad to have you see the Osborne Binder
work. Wishing you success, I am, Yours truly,
E. B. THOMPSON.
Two years later the following testamonial was furnished:

Mr. \V. E. Stovall,
Conyers, Ga. I
Dear Sir: Your letter of the 11 ult. to hand and in reply will say 1 gave to D. M. OsborneCo.,
a testamonial as to the merits of there Mowing machine some time in IS90 and every word 1 wrote in
tlmt testamonial is Vue, and nothing but plf.in facts: and since I have used the Mower through B
seasons, under all the disadvantages, through which machines could be pleased it. seems to me, L
can now say, they are the most durable machine on the market, as far as I know and 1 have been
running machines for thirty years. I have worn bur a machine of every make you mention in your
letter except the Osborne, and I know whereof I speak in saying it is the best on the market The cir¬
cular letters that the Company have printed were not intended by me to be used as an advertisement
for their machines. The one theS. W. Davidson & Co., at Gainesville, Ga., was written in the same
spirit I write this, The one to the Talmage Hardware Co., was an answer to the question asked by
the Company, as stated in the letter.
You may say to all Machine Agents that I am not now, nor have I ever been, an agent for any
machine made nor have I received directly or indirectly any remnnertion fftr the testimonials given the
D. M. Osbourn & Co., and will say that their Binders and Harrows are as good as they claim them.
Hoping 1 have assured you fully, 1 am Respectfully yours,
E. B. THOM I'SON.
