ATLANTA.
On W ednesJay morning last, in com
pany with our portly fellow-citizen, Mr.
H. Bryans, Sr., and Judge E. B Ros¬
ier, we boarded the Accommodation
train for Atlanta. On oui arriva', friend
Biyans escorted us to^a hotel on Alabama
kept by Mr. Keith, where be said
we could get a good “square meal” serv
ed ia the best of style, at a nominal price
Of course, we were wanting to find just
such accommodations, and went, and
must admit that friend Biyans “knows
the ropes” in the citing line, in that city.
After an absence of nearly two years,
we were surprised to see the marked
changes and improvements in portions of
the city, but more especially in the im¬
mediate vicinity of the car shed. Where
vacancy reigned, is now built up with
magnificent business houses and filled
with goods. The public spirit and enei
gy of the citizens of Atlanta, is certainly
wi.hout a parallel in any portion of the
south, and we doub‘ if any northern city
has made such vapid strides in architec
tural magnificence and business enter¬
prise, as the Gate City has accomplished
since 1865, when Sherman’s army left it
a pile of smouldering fire brands and
allies.
Our object in visiting the city, was to
renew our acquaintance with our old
friends and patrons ; and we were more
than gratified to find so many of those
who came to the city years ago, who
have grown in prosperity with the growth
of the city ; some to whom Atlanta owes
much of her commercial prosperity, who
have, for years, made a free use of prints
er’s ink to bring their place of business
before the people Of Georgia and adjoin.,
ing Stales:
Among those who have shown marked
evidences of prosperity, is Johu Ryan,ou
W hitehall street. Stepping in, we were
greeted by our old-time friend, A. S.
Fadey, who is employed in this immense
establishment owing to his affable man
Let's and extensive business acquaintance,
Id direct customers to the different d V -
part mentis of the establishment; wh-re
they are immediate’y attended to by the
clerks in the department in which the
customer wishes to trade Of course,
we were not on a trading expedit’on, at
least not purchasing, but our friend Tal¬
ley did us the honor to show us through,
and we have no hesitancy in saying that
it is one among the largest establishments
in the South,
Just opposite, on Whitehall, is the niaiii
moth dry goods establishment <f o:ir
friend, Capt, John Keely, which ruay be
considered the rival establishment to
Ryan’s. Capt. Keely is among those
who have helped to make Atlanta wha<
it is as a commercial emporium. He is
noted for his courteous and po’ile atten¬
tion in his customers, which is the prin¬
cipal part of his occupation. Such men
deserve success.
Further down the street, we came
Across our old-time friend and associate,
T. K Ripley. We knew him in Atlanta
when we were quite a youth, when the
grubs and stumps were thick in White¬
hall street, aud houses were few and
far b.etvveen. He has remained in that
•city ever since, and opened the first
crockery store that made its appearance
in that city. He is still engaged in the
same business, and may be considered
among the reliable business men of the

Their stock is large and varied, and they
are prepared tu accommodate the trade
on as good terms as any establishment
in the South. In years past, they have
advertised their business extensively, and
they are still ok the opinion that a judi¬
cious use of printer’s ink is one of the
stepping stones to success.
Our limited stay in the city, prevented
us from making new acquaintances, or
even to pay our addreses to the half of
our old friends and customers;

On Thursday last, the President vetoed
the Blaud Silver Bill, stating as a reason
for not approving it, that it is a violation
of good faith bn the part of the govern¬
ment. The Senate and House of Repre¬
sentatives, however, being of a different
opinion, made short work of the Presi¬

Profundity of thought is generally
purchased at the expense of versatility.
To be very profound it is necessary that
the intellectual eye be fixed, for a long
time, on one continuous senes of opera¬

over none. Profundity plunges to the
