A WfilSKY WAR IN SOUTH CAROLINA. !
having '— arrested by the; j
Three men been
United States revenue officia’s on a
charge of illicit distilling, were lodged in
Pickens county jail. On Saturday last a
party of armed men appeared at the jail
and demanded the release of the prison
ers. The jailel- being till prepared to re¬
sists, the ineli were permitted to L-aVe
with their rescuers. Information of the
resetie was conveyed to Governor Ilamp
toll, who, in a letter to the Sheriff, de
nounces the outrage ar.d Directs him to
use •all the. means in his power to bring
the offenders to justice.
It is ascertained that the rescuing par¬
ty was composed of about thiity-five men
under the leadership ot the notorious
Redmond* who shot officer Barton a few
months ago and who, it will lie remem¬
bered, is a fugitive from North Carolina,
Where there is now a reward of $1,000
offered for his apprehension as a urirde»\_
ei\ tl is stated that (if tel- the rescue
Redrnon and parly went to the house of
Win. Gary, who has enmity
of the distil 1 el’s by acting as guide to sev
oral revenue raiding parties, for the pur¬
pose of killing him, but ascertaining that
be was absent on a raid with Deputy
Collector Hoffman, the rescuers staited
in pursuit, and on Tuesday chased Hoff¬
man, Gray and a posse ot seven men with
them across the country to Easley Stas
lion on the Air Line Railroad, where
they bow are. Collector Brayton re¬
ceived telegraphic ojders Rom Washing¬
ton Wednesday morning to organize as
large a force as necessary, and to pursue
and capture Kedtnon and his gang at all
hazards. A large force was accordingly
organized in Gre nville, Spartersburg and
Pickens counties, who were to start in
pm suit of the lescuers yesterday. As
Redmond is reported to have a well or¬
ganized band, well armed and equipod,
and he defiies arrest, a collision is not
probable.
Latest advi.es from Collector
at Spartanburg, say ; “nothing

SyUaCUSic, N. Y., March 25.—One
the most attrccious murders ever commit
ted in the annals ol Onondaga County,
was perpetrated nine milles north of this
city in the town of Cicero. Mrs, Laura
A. hidden, aged forty-six years, slew her
own mother, Mrs. Lucy Daj, aged sev
entyrnine years. At the time old Mrs.
Day was seen by a neighbor to come out
of her house and sink down under a tree.
The neighbor went toller and saw she
was dying. At that moment the daugl 3
ter came out of the houso, and brutally re
marked: ‘The devilish old fool fell
down arid hurt herself, and now, damn
Her, she lias come out to make a show of
herself.”
The dying woman was helped into the
house by neighbors, who asked the
daughter to explain the blood which sat¬
urated the old woman’s gafllientP;
.Again the daughter made the same re
ply, and drove the neighbors out of the
house, declaring she would lay the old la
dy out alone and wanted none of their
help. Some of tile neighboring women,
011 her, when
they discovered a deep Stab in the old
woman's back just under her left shoul¬
der bladel' Mrs. Eddeu took the blood¬
stained garments from her mother’s body
ard hid a portion of them in a loft of the
house, and burned the remainder. Tiie
knife which Mrs. Edden drove into her
mother’s back was found stained with
blood. As the? b'ade pierced the old la¬
dy and struck the bone it partly closed
on the daughter’s hand, making a bad
wound. The daughter’s blood-stained
clothing has been found, and there is not
the slightest doubt that she is the uiur
duress,
Nows regarding European complica¬
tions still savors of war. There is really
no apparent charge in the Situation. In¬
fluential and moderate politicians fear
that England's policy will force Russia to
occupy Constantinople and drive the Sul
tan from Europe. The only boj>e of a
peaceful solution of the difficulty is said
to be in si speedy assembling of the Con¬
gress. Tho bellicose feeling in St. Pe¬
tersburg is intense. The Journal de
St. Tetersbhrg declares that if England
will not yield to the wishes of Europe
the Congress must meet without her, or
Russia must act-alone.
Geo rge Br. Weynifm, of Columbus,
Uliio, yesterday shot and kill his son and
then committed suicide. A niisund er>
standing arising from business complica¬
tions was the'cause of the deed.
