This is decidedly an age of improvement
in all branches of mechanical, agricultur¬
al and domestic departments, but in no
particular branch ol industry has a gteat
er improvement been attained than in
appliances for cooking. The latest nov¬
elty that Isas been brought forward, is
“Stench's Steam -Cooker,’ which, for
e' enemy and convenience, is superior to
any thin - of the kind ever offered to the
public. It is so arranged that a variety ol
meats, vegetables, rice fruits, or anything
that is boiled or stewed, can be cooked
at the same time, without mixing the fla¬
vors, while the vessel only oedupy one
hole in the stove. The steam cooker is
now being manufactured in this place,
and for sale by Messrs Whitehead, Tai¬
lor & Jones, who are proprietors of the
right for several counties. See adver
rtisement in another column of this is¬
sue.
We received a call from Mr. George
R. Dorsey, traveling agent for the Real
Estate and Renting Bureau Monthly,
published iu Augusta, Ga, by Lockhart

c.ttion is an advertising medium for the
sale or renting of real estate, in any part
oftheStatSk The subscription price is
$5 which entitles the subscriber to ad¬
vertise his property without .additional
charge. Judge A. C. McC dla is the lo¬
cal agent at this place, and each county
cite has ore local agent, whose duty it is
to endeavor to find purchasers for the
property advertised. We have no doubt
but the plan will work well.

While the management of the Geor

cut
off all Unnecessary expense, they should
not forget that their tariffs, both for
freight and passage, are still maintained
at the high prices of an inflated currency,
while everything else has been reduced to
a restricted currency and a hard-monev
basts. Aside from the exorbitant rat» s
maintained by the management, to the
annoyance and detriment of the section of
country through which the road runs,
there has been a decided spirit of illiber
a’ity displayed which has had the ten¬
dency to create anything but a friendly
feeling on the part ot the patrons of the
toad: toward the management, or a dis¬
position to contribute v\ith any degree
Of cheerfulness, to its prosperity, F. r a
pfOp e to wear the yoke of a railroad
monopoly with any degrees of complas
cenc v, the management must be temper¬
ed with a spirit of liberality that will,
in some measure, relieve the disagre ea*>
bleness of the but then. The old admin
isltation* of the Georgia road were guilty
of the foo’ishness of that class of people
who, from a want of a proper knowledge,
dr the capacity td understand the true
principles of political eccnomv, are de¬
signated as penny wise and pound
foolish,'’ “saving at the spiggot and losing
at the bung,” in their endeavor to “kill
the goose that laid them lire golden egg’’
in former years of their prosperity.
The m rogiince and utter disregard of
the wishes of the people, when some
favor was petitioned, almost amounted
io an insult, by actions which too plainly
indicated that “ We, the managers of the
great monopoly, the Georgia Railroad
are masters of the situation ; while you,
the people, arc compelled to comply
with our exorbitant demands, whether
you l ke it or not. We have you un
.FT our heel, and will grind the last far¬
thing of your industry from yotg if you
use our conveniences, and that you are
compered to do. We are your masters.”
We say the above spuit was too plain
ly manifested by the management, to be
mistaken or overlooked, and contributed
no little in determining the people to
effect a change in the administration.—
The grand .mistake ot the administration
was tiiat it imagined itself beyond the
reach ot public ihdignatton, but it has
been taught the important lesson that
dure is a means of reaching even the
inside workings ot a railroad monopoln
The number of fnnpty trains that daily
pass up and down the road, at a dead
expense, is one of the results of the mis¬
takes of the old administration* and will
be s riottsly felt by the new administra¬
tion, unless it lias the, sagacity to com¬
prehend the situation and apply the pro¬
per remedy, which does not consist alone
i i lopping olf a tew officials whose set -
vices can he dispensed with, nor in re¬
ducing tile wages of the employees to a
point below what is requisite to supply
themselves and their families the neces
saries ot lire ; but by seeking favor with
the people whoso money and pa f ronge
keeps the mutP'inery ill motion | whose
money built the road* and for whose
convenience and accommodation it was
designed. A reduction in the freight
and passenger tariffs, and a spirit of ac¬
commodation and liberality, is what is
needed to build up the interests of the
road, and restore the stock to its pat
value.
