The Japanese have a record of all the
earthquakes in The larger cities of the
empire for the last 1509 years, The

were twenty-eight of these latter in the

Some interesting trials have been made
in England with a view to ascertain the ;
condition of iron and steel when subject' 8
ed to concessive strains, : n contradistine
tion to the application of steady median
; eal force. Square pieces of iron and
steel boiler plates were used for the pur*
pose, the former being 7-16 inch thick,
aud the latter §, in a charge ut one and
half pounds of gun cotton. Each plate
was laid ever a bastn-like eavi y in the
top of a large block of iron, and the gun
cotton was exploded over the centre, at
a height of abcut nine inches. The re¬
sults of the experiments showed that the
niiid steel plates of the Siemens and Bes¬
semer processes, tempered in oil, possess
an endurance and ductility far beyond
what have ever characterized wrought
irons, and thal steel is much superior to
iron lor iWmanufacture ot boilers, loco
motive tires or rails. The annealing p.o
cess was si,own to be clearly advantage
ous lor steel.
It is a little curious to know that Ger¬
many has outstripped Ireland ia the work
of filling up the empty places in ibis
country. 'The statistics of emigration for
the last thirty years compiled by Super.,
intendent Jackson, show that those conn
tries have furnished more than 2.009,000
immigrants each, but that Germany is
more than 100,000 ahead of Ireland.

Some active women, who pride them¬
selves on their housekeeping, seem to
forget that the object of keeping house
is, that human beings may be aecommo
dated ia it. Their sole idea seems to be
this, that the object of keeping a house
is, that the house may be kept in a cer¬

ance of the form and order they sacri¬
fice the comfort the bouse was establish¬

pests to society, because they want sense
to direct and control their enei-gies.
