FOR CONGRESS,
Horn JAS. H. BLOUNT,
OF BIBB.
ROCKDALE COUNTf FAIR
Comes off October 15th to I8lb, under
the management of the Rockdale County
Fair Association.
Thla has, hitherto, been a successful
and self-sustaining fair. The officers are
deeply gtateful for the assistance and en''
conragement they have received Irora a
generona pub'io in the past, and they re
■pectfn ly solicit an extension of the
same to them during tbeir next Fair.
As the prime object of the Association
h to benefit every individual in this and
adjoining counties, it seems but natural
that every man, woman and child, mer*
chant and mechanic, as well as farmer,
should feel an interest in the Fair, and
endeavor to make it a success by putting
something on exhibition.
The premium list has been carefully
revised and will be found very full, es
peciady in lbe ladies’ department. Pre^
miuins in this department will be paid
in silver plate. The ladies, by the extM'
cise of their exoelle.it taste; and their
aptitude to any good work that tpnds to
elevate their race, have heretofore made
their department the most interesting
and the greatest success of any. Let
then, remember that there are premiums
offered for every article of woman’s work,
from a darned stocking to silk embfoid*
t ry, from a pound of soap to an oil paint
iug. We would like for them to brihg
out all the pretty things, the useful
things, the nice things to eat and drink,
that they have been preparing all these
long summer days ; compare notes with
their friends and see who is ahead. And
above all else, be sure to lend us the
light of their presence on the fairsground.
It the ladies are out, we arc sure -of a
crowd. '
To the gentlemen we would say, look
over tho premium list, and then take
•tock of your possessions, see if you have
not something extra, something animate
or inanimate, that you feel a little proud
ot and would like to show yjur neigh
bora. Bring it al >ng, and if it should
not be the best of its sort, you will.at
knit have don* tho host you could to
promote the interest of your county Fair.
In conclusion, as we have forgotten no
class of out people, but even the hum¬
blest colored man will find h : s work ap¬
preciated and rewarded, we invite all, of
•very class, in this and adjoining coun¬
ties, to eoiue and bring their friends,
and whatever they may wish to exhibit.

Old John Robinson, the oelebrated
circus man, gave half the gross receipts
of a late exhibition in Quincy, Illinois,
amounting to seven hundred and fifty
dollars, for the benefit of l he yellow fe
ver sufferers, and the members of his
company contributed two hundred and
fltty»six dollars more, making one thou¬
sand and six dollars. Pretty good for
these ‘play people .'*—Savannah News.
Mr. H. r, Russell, who dwells near
Ironton, Mo., Ploughed up an unexphr
ded percussion shell, and wishing to pre¬
serve it aft a memento of the war, put it
into a barrel of water and let it remain
lor about six weeks, On Thursday he
tried to take out its contems, using
that purpose a hammer snd a cold chisel.
He held tho shell between his knees, and
after a few strokes it exploded, scattering
i»s fragments far and wide, some of them
being heard whizzing through tho air
half a mile distant. Mr. Russell was so
verely wounded. The missile was fired
from one of Price's gun’s in September,
1864.
Tho most perilous hour of a man’*
)ifo is when he is tempted to despond.
Tho man who loses his courage loses all i
there Is no more hope of binx than a dead
man ; but it matters not how poor he
imty be, how much deserted by friends,
how much lost t.a the world, if ho keeps
his courage, holds up his head, works on
with’ his hands, and with uueouquerable
will determines to bo and to do what be¬
comes a man, all will bo well. It is noth¬
ing outside of him that kills, bnt what is
within that makes or unmakes.
During a recent thunder storm m Sil¬
ver City, Nevada, the dwelling of Mr.
Lawson became so charged with elec¬
tricity that none of the kitchen utensils
wero of service, When touched they
emitted sparks as large those genera
ted by-batteries used for bigs’ ing, and
upon Mrs. Lawson picking tip g fork she
received a shock that caused her to siul
•uly drop that insixnmcut.

Among the notable contribulions to

Next in point of meanness to doing an
injury is to do a man a favor and every
now and then remind him of it.
A Rochester editor's wife has killed
one burglar, wounded two tramps, put
out a big fire and delivered a lecture.

Experiments have been made with the

A new engine of warfare lately inven¬
ted, will probably attract consider¬
able attention. It consists of a can
non, so aranged as to discharge -a
sharp sword blade crosswise in the di
reel ton of the anomy, the knife or cutter
, being . poised .... through , , the
so ux its efueer
aiv as to cover the whole space in a Ion
giliuUnal direction described by the blade
itself. An eighgtsineh ball would
carry a sword fourteen fee’, in length six
hundred yards, literally mowing down
every human obstacle in its path.
