A young lady of this city was re¬
cently noticed by her mother to be
fondling and kissing her pet kitten.
‘Why, Mary,’said the mother, ‘you
have kissed that kitten more in five
minutes than you have me in five
years.’ ‘ Don’t you know why I’d
rather kiss the kitten than you-, moth¬
er? ‘No, my child.’ ‘You haven’t
got whiskers.’—Boston Courier.
Gov. Colquitt will hardly accuse
Gen. Gartrell of being a Radical
merely because he coddles the darky
for his vote. Mr. Stephens is engag¬
ed in tbe same disreputable business.
Both of these candidates know that
the position of the negroes in Geor¬
gia is a subordiate one, socially as
well as politically, and they will do
an irreparable injury to tbe State it
tbeir speeches should arouse in the
negroes the hope of any change in
that relation.
The richest treasure a man ever
gels in this world is a good wife.
The poorest investment he ever
makes is a poor wife, no matter how
much money she has. Marriage is
a transaction which should be remove
ed as far as possible from the moneys
ed value ot either party. The haps
piest homes everywhere have been
bought and paid for by the mutual
earnings after marriage. Nothing is
truer than that the good wife in the
home is as surely a toils money-earner with hand as
tbe husband, who or
brain. The best motto of every
young mau or woman is: “ Marry
lor love and work for riches.” It
may be an old fogy idea, but raiU
lions of homes will bear testimony to
its truthfulness.
The saloons of Hainc.
In the city of Bangor, Maine, one
hundred saloons do a thriving busis
ness, aud Mr. Emery, of that place,
remarked the other day to a report
ter :
“Prohibition is such a farce in this
State that Maine has become the
laughing stock of the Uuiou. I have
had occasion to go pretty thoroughly
over this State, and never yet have I
been in a place where I could no* get
a drink ot liquor. The temperance
men do not propose to be tied to any
liquor grand old party’ that office; will the nominate,
sellers to tempers
anee men have been fooled with
promises too many times. We have
a right to vote as we please and as
we believe, without being tied to tbe
tail of any party. For my own part,
I wonld much rather see a than good,
strict licens law iu tbe State to
see the whole temperance question
made eomtemptible by a prohibitory
law which does not prohibit.”

r THE NEWEST SHOW
1\D THE BIGGEST.
S. Il Barren A Co.’s New
United Ulonster Railroad
Shows.
This newest as well as most colos^
sal ot all amusement enterprises will
positively exhibit at Conyers ou
Tuesday Oct 10. It is the best ads
vertised show that has ever beeu an¬
nounced here, Not only are its
bright ° and costly pictorials displayed
ou ev ery side, tor miles aiound, and
its illustrated newspaper and pro¬
grammes scattered like snow-flakes,
but there is a solid emphatic style iu
its manner of presenting its claims
which commands attention and begets
confidence. It is conspicuous tor not
indulging in the stale, dishonest, “ag^
gregation,’' “alliance,’’ ‘'combination”
and “twelve showa-in-one” clap-trap,
which has always involved proved a such delusion
and a snare and pre¬
posterous claims as to utterly discred¬
it itself with all except the greenest
lools. Od the contrary, it aASumes
only to be one new and great show,
which is the best of reasons for be
lieving it to be so. Neither does it
resort to manufactured names and
purpose] y^tnixed andwague generali
lies and figures, in order to convey
the swindling impression that it has
rare attractions, which, in fact, have
no honest existence,
Its attractions are raultifa.ious as
well as novel, and it is a matter of
surprise how many strictly new feats
ures can be crowded in a single exhis
bition. Zebras broken to perfo , m
incredible feats, hurdledeapers rein¬
deers, girafies, harnessed to Roman
racing chariots, Harriraan’s steam air¬
ship in opeiation, a man-sized riding
cynocephalus, elks harnessed tandem,
ten funny clowns in simultaneous rri
valry, high and long-distance double
somersault leapers, peerless exploits
in the gymnasium, extraordinarily
trained thoroughbred horses, comical
school of monkey comedians, monster
living White Nile Hippopotamus, ex
traordiuary feats of hurculean stength
deeds of masculine and feminine in¬
trepidity, of and, in fact, so great an ar
ray novelties and surprises that it
would transcend the limits of a news¬
paper notice to give them even the
briefest mention. The street parade
is commensurate in magnitude and
grandeur with the exhibition, and
introduces among other attractions,
thirty Arabian camels, decorated in
the liohes and most costly trappings
and mounted by natiue Mahoine
dans.
A Good Story of Stephens and
Toombs,
A doctor Darned Iioyston had sued
Peter Bennett for his bill, long over
due, for attending the wite of the lats
ter. Alexander H. Stephens was on
the Beuutit side and Robert Toombs
thin Senator of the United States,
was for Dr. Iioyston. The Doctor
proved the number of his visits, their
value according to local custom, and
his own authority to do medical prac¬
tice. Mr. Stephens told his client
that the physician had made out his
case, and as there was nothing where¬
with to rebut or offset the claim, the
only thing left to do was to pay it,
“No,” said Peter, “I hired you to
speak in my case, and now Speak.”
Mr. Stephens told him there was
nothing to say ; he had looked on to
see that it was made out, and it was.
Peter was obstinate, and at lust Mr.
Stephens told him to make a speech
himself, if he thought one coaid be
made.
“I will. ’ said Peter Bennet, “ it
Bobby Toombs will not be too bard
on me.”
Senator Toombs promised, and Pe¬
ter began:
“Gentlemen of the jury—you and
I is plain farmers, and if we don't
stick together, tbese’ere lawyers and
doctors will git the advantage of us.
I ain’t no objections to them in
theii proper places*; bub they ain’t
farmers, gentlemen of the jury.”
“Now this man Royston was a new
doctor, and I went for him to come
an’ to doctor my wife’s sore leg. And
he come and put some salve truck ons
to it and some rags, but never done
it one bit of good, gentlemen of the
jury. I don’t believe he is no doctor,
no way. There is doctors as is doc¬
tors sure enough, but this mau don’t
earn his money; and if you send for
him, as Mrs. Sarah Atkinson did, for
a negro boy as was worth $4,00J
he just kills him and wants pay for
it.”
“I don’t,” thundered the doctor.
“Did you cure him asked Peter,
with the low accent of a judge with a
black cap on.
The doctor was silent, and Peter
proceeded:
“As I was a sayin’, gentlemen of
the jury, we farmers, when we sell
our cotton, has got lo give vally lor
the money we ask and doctois aint
none too good to be put to the same
rule. And I don’t btdeve this Sam
Royston is no doctor, no how.”
The physician again put in his oar,
with “Leak at my diphoma if you
think 1 am no doctor.”
“His diploma!” exclaimed the new
fledged orator, with great contempt.
‘‘His diploma ! Gentlemen, that is a
big word for printed sheepskius, and
it didn’t make no doctor ol the sheep
as first wore it, nor does it of the man
as now carries it and I p’mt out to
>1 ou that he ain’t no doctor at
C3
i he man ot medicine was now in a
fury and screamed cut, “Ask my pa¬
tients il I am not a doctor!”
“I asked my wite,” retorted Peter,
“ and she said as how she thought
you wasn’t.”
“ Ask my other patients,” said Dr.
Royston.
This seemed to be the straw that
broke the camel’s back, for Peter re¬
plied with a look and tone ot unutter¬
able sadness;
“ That is a bard sayin’, gentlemen
ol the jury, undone that requires me
lo die or to have powers as I’ve beam
tell ceased to be exercised since tbe
Apostles. Does he expect me to
bring the Angel Gabriel down to
toot his horn before the time, and cry

TAKING CARE ATT FI COTTON,
The folio ing from the Columbus
Times is veiy reasonable ,,-lvice for
.
the farmers and planters of this sec
lion. In preparing cotton, as in every
other part of farm work, only the
careful and pains-taking reap the full
reward of their labor, and a little care
now will go further than a great dt 1
of work in the past season :
“After all that has been said about
the magnificent crops of the Souih,
and the independence that now awaits
the Southern farmer, there is much
reason to fear that all the hoj es may
not be realized. Much, however, w il!
from this time forward, depend upon
the farmer himself and the care that
he bestows upon the handling of the
products of his fields. The hand ing
ot his corn, oats, potatoes and hay, is
a strictly home affair, for none of our
readers raise those most useful com
modies for sale, beyond the limited
demands of their markets towns. But
not so with the cotton crop. That is
a product that rnu-t be raised ai.d
prepared to meet the fastidious re¬
quirements ot every man who buys
between the field of producer and the
European manufacturer. To get i *
full value then, it is absolutely neees
sary that the firmer sh“U:d see to ii
that the cotton is poperly picked
from the stalk, that it is prope. ly
cleansed of trash, and tnat no sand
shall be packed with it in the bale.
For several years past every cotton
market in the South has had thrown
in its teeth by the Nor then and for¬
eign manufactures and cotton dealers
the most damaging charges of sand
packed and “fdse packed’’ cotton
Even the smallest stains that *>n y
discolor without redly damaging ih
fibre or harming it except in appear¬
ance, is made a pretext of ivilueinu
the grade and lowering the price from
two to three cents per pound. Tin
late storm—that of Saturday nigh
last—has doubtless done great dam¬
age to the opening cotton in beaiiug
it into the earth. This was humanly
speaking, impossible to prevent, but
it now behoov s the farmer to make
the best of it by having it car fully
saved, and every panicle of dirt and
sand separated from it before it i
packed. One pound of dirt or s n d
in a bale of cotton may cost the farm-.
er five or even ten dollars, for v\ he
sand is found in it, it becomes discreet
ited at once, it loses its grade a
judged by the staple, an 1 is bought
with the badge of dishonor on i’, with
all the odds against the farnn r. And
m addition to this care to avoid “sand
packing,’ ‘r<>ck packing,’ ‘w iter pack
ing,’ and ‘trash paukin,’ especial pain>
should be taken not to ‘mix pack
When good cotton and poor cotton
clean cotion. and stained cotton ar<
■ packed together, it is all sampled a

of the good cotton is lost to tiie ta m
er. Cotton planters shou’d do with
their eoiton just as merchants do with
theii goods, and factory men wit!
their cloth. Put it in nice shape—ad
ot a sort together—make it show 10
the best possible advantage, ami ye:
have every portion ot it only’ a tab
sample of every other portion. 1.
they will do that they will always gc
the very highest market price for
their staple. We make these sugges¬
tions because we know the iate storm
has done om farming friends much
damage, and we want it to fill on
tnem as lightly as possible, and we
know they can make it vastly light r
thin usual, if they will commence in
time and remove from their cot on a-
far as may may be, all ihe eftVcs <>i
the storm It will be troublesome.
but tbe cotton is already made aud
has a year’s work and privation in
vested in it, and it a litde extra care
now can remedy the damaged itthmild
t> e bestowed, Ol course, after thi
storm, cotton buyers will be on the
alert t0 d,aoover everything in cveay
bale that comes under their examines
tioD, whatever tb re maybe to hea»
tne price down here and abroad. S.
we will repeat that cotton when
brought to market, must show as few
signs ot stains, careless gathering,
mixed packing, or ‘take pacing’ b as
possible, if the planter exjx’cts to gel
the full value ot his bale."’
