The body of a negro man has been

There is a gentleman living near

such luxuries.
The election of Major D. N. Speer
to a place on the Hoard of Directors

State point him out as a financier of

fallen off somewhat since the last re¬

of over three hundred thousand bu?h
of sweet potatoes available for market
and that it is likely that they will be
sold in the West. Another iinpor**
taut point is the chemical and com¬

about 23 cents a bushel, Farmers

A most carefully prepared report of
tbe population of the v;>i i<'us coun¬
tries < f the world teihafc issued from
time to time by Drs. Behm and 'Wag¬
ner. A new edition of this publica¬
tion lias just appeared, tbe previous
one having been issued two years.
Within th s interval censuses have
been taken in a large number of coun¬
tries, and tbe results of these are em¬
bodied in this work. But in ihe case
of some countfies no official slat sties
are to be had, and for such countries
the figmes presented are necessarily
the result of computation or even con¬
jecture. The report of the population
of China, for instance, is but an esti¬
mate, while that of Central Africa C ill
be liitle be»ter than a guess. The res
suits given by Behm and Wagner are.
however, generally accepted as the
most trustworthy pmbkshed.
The total population o ; ^ the globe is
now repoued by them at 1,433,800X33.
Accoidi ig to their last report it was
1.455.900,000, I'hls difference wou'd
indicate a decrease of 22,000,003, but as
a matter of fact there lias, according
to these authorities, been an increase
of moie than 33,030.000. This is ex¬
plained by the fac* that the population
of China has bee-i very much over-es¬
timated heretofore. In the last issue
of this work it was given at 434,003,
000; it is now put at 379.( >0,000. In
fact, in those countries alone iu which
censuses have been taken the officii i
return shows an aggregate increase ot
32,000,000 duviug me preceding inter¬
val of ten years. The number of peo •
pie inhabiting the larger divisions of
the globe, as giveu by Behm aud Wag¬
ner, are as follows; Europe, 327,743,
000; Asia, 795,591,000; Africa, 205,
S23,000r America, 1*00,415,000; Aus¬
tralia aud Pojyuesia, 4,232,000; Polar
regions, 82 000 . Russi is credited
with 83,000.000 inhabitants: China
379,000,000; Japan, 36,000,00, and
British India 252,000,000
