THE CONGRESSIONAL ELECTION.
Tha date for h6lding the congress
sional election is Tuesd.ty, November
7th. It is not tar off, and every vot*
et-in the county should bear it in
mind. The democratic candidate for
the State at large, Is Hon. Thomas
Hardeman, of Macon. He is one of
the purest and best tnon in the State,
and is eminently worthy of your
hearty support, He has, in times
past, probably done more gratuitous
work for the public good thrn any
man in the State, He is a tree pa¬
triot, and never shirks the discharge
of public duty. Ilia majority ought
to be at least 100,000 votes. You
owe it to him and the country to
came out to the polls on the 7th of
November and give him your vote.
The candida'e for congress in this
district is Hou. James H. Blount, aK
so of Macon He is the present mem
ber of congress, and is said to be one
of the hardest workers in the nation
al council. He is therefore entitled
to your auppoit for re-election, and
you should give it to him. The elec>
tion of Mr. Hardeman is for the state
at large, and that Mr. Blount is for
this, the 6th district. Both are to be
voted lor at the same time. Be sure
that both names are on your tickets.
The eleciion is held November 7th*
Don’t forget the Star.
Boys, farming is a slow way to make
money, and its all the better for that.
Money made slow is money made sure.
A dollar dug out of the ground is worth
five dollars made in town and better
than a hundred dollars given to a young
man. Habits are formed in our youth,
and town habits are to spend all that is
made. A young man that is clerking at
$50 a month adll spend it all going to
shows and frolicking around, which ain’t
so bad, if it wasn’t for the habits, He
gets so after awhile that he is always
hankering after shows and some new ex¬
citement. A young man ought to spend
three . r four years in the country, if for
nothing else but his good health—his
constitution. It will build him up and
expand him.
We get the following particulars of the
killing of Powel Reed from the Walton
News.
We have been expecting for several
weeks that ano'hei horror would occur
in this county, and sure enough it came
Sunday morning, and for cold-hearted
brutality it has seldom had an equal.
Last Saturday night two negroes, Powel
Reed and Henry McCurry, went to a
lewd house, near Mr. Bob Green’s place,
two miles below Social Circle. Sunday¬
morning, while Reed was still asleep,
McCurry got up, and with a heavy axe
struck Reed » Uiuw on the temple, send¬
ing the axe up to the eye into the poor
negro's head. He made his escape, and
bad not been caught when we last heard.
The murdered negro worked on the
Georgia railroad, and the murderer came
from Jasper county. If he is caught
Walton county will witness a first class
hanging. Jealousy was the cause*

He was a young man about twent\
years of age, and leaves a host of reN
ativts and friends to mourn his uu**
timely death.
We regret exceedingly to learn of
the accident which hap pened to the
little sen of Mr, Samuel Broadnax,
of Walnut Grove, on last Saturday.
He was riding along the road in a
wagon, the mu'vs became frightened
and ran away and threw him out,
breaking his leg and otherwiso injur**

A terrible riot occurred last Fri¬

parties were ah respectable men. The

The First Gun.
Editors Evening News;
Gen. Stephen D. Lee says the first
gun was fired at Fort Sumter by Geo.
S. Gaines, of South Carolina. As
this is a matter of history, let’s have
it right. The first gun was fired at
Sumter by George S. James, ot South
Carolina, who was First Lieutenant
in Battery B, Fourth U. S. Artillery.
When South Carolina seceded he re*
signed, came home, and waa placed
in command ol the artillery ia Fort
Johnson, on James Island. He it was
who fired the first gun, which was
more of a signal than an attempt on
the tort. Geo. S. James was after¬
wards made Lieutenant Colonel of the
Third South Carolina Battalion of
Infantry, and waa killed at Boones
boro Gap, in Maryland. **Confkd.”

There is to be a wedding soon, the
way to which was paved with so
much delicate ingenuity by the lndv
in the case that it is worth recording,

remotely alluded to the wedding d.iv

waiting made up her mind to prompt
him a little on the first favorable oc
cassion It happened in this wav •
They were sitting in the garden, and
as was his custom he was making
himself agrecalde by gallant speeches,
in one of which h e alluded to her as
,‘darling ” He emphrasiz* d the name
by a tender pressure of the hand, and
remarked that “ darling ” was the
sweetest word in the English lan¬
guage for him,
“ Do you think so?” she asked in a
tremulous voice: “there is another
name that to me is far sweeter. ’
“What is it, darling?" asked the
lovir, rapturously.
“Just a little word of four letters—
wife”—she answered with a g<-*»d e

day when he might call her by her
