Forsyth teen accused of road rage beating
BY STEWART VOEGTLIN
JACKSON PROGRESS-ARGUS
Nineteen year-old Michael
McKool of Forsyth has con
fessed to severely beating a 47-
year-old Crawford County man
in a road rage outburst on 1-75
last month, according to the
Butts County Sheriff’s Office.
McKool confessed late last
month to violence against
Audie Johnson, the husband of
Crawford County Magistrate
Judge Donna Johnson, on the
shoulder of 1-75 on March 5.
Butts County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Tim
Filbeck told the Jackson newspaper
that McKool was picked up by
sheriff’s deputies March 23
after two tips to the Crime
Stoppers Network reported
where McKool worked and what
he drove.
“One [person] said that
McKool bragged about beating
the man,” said Filbeck.
Major Mike Overbey contacted
MCKOOL McKool’s mother and McKool
was brought in and confessed to
deputies. He was charged with aggra
vated battery.
The alleged incident between McKool
and Johnson occurred between 5:30 and
5:45 a.m. on March 5. McKool and
Johnson were traveling north on 1-75
when McKool pulled in front of Johnson
at Exit 201 in Butts County. McKool
prevented Johnson from driving further
and Johnson stopped his vehicle. Both
McKool and Johnson exited their auto
mobiles. McKool told sheriff’s deputies
that he hit Johnson with his fists.
Two witnesses called 911; one reported
the confrontation; another reported a
man lying on the ground at Exit 201.
Johnson suffered lacerations about the
head and face, bruising about the ribs
and severe head trauma. He was in an
induced comatose state for several days
and just recently regained conscious
ness and is breathing without a ventila
tor.
McKool, who is wanted out of
Rockdale County for battery and crimi
nal damage to property and Snellville
on an outstanding warrant for posses
sion of marijuana, is being held at the
Butts County Jail without bond.
McKool could potentially face additional
charges.
