Forsyth UMC holds annual bunny parade
Children from the Forsyth United Methodist Church Preschool were led on a parade by none other than
the Easter Bunny herself last month. The parade started at the preschool and ended at the home of
Representative Jim Cole where hundreds of candy filled eggs were waiting to be found. Following the
egg hunt the children and their parents enjoyed a picnic and playtime in the Cole's very child-friendly
back yard. This yearly event is just one of the many exciting experiences
children take part in at the FUMC Preschool. The students at Forsyth UMC thank the Coles for their
hospitality. Pictured L-R: Logan Hickman, Gavin Durden, Carlie Allen, Maradeth Leverett, Ms. Bunny,
Blakely Harrell, Jason Cox, Ms. Bonnie Grizzard, Emiley Hanson. Front row: Willow Waldrep, Evan
Miller. Not pictured: Ms. Cindy Jenkins.

Bumblebees and hope
A ccording to rec
ognized
aerotechnical
tests, the bum
blebee cannot fly
because of the shape and
weight of the body in rela
tion to the total
wing area. But
the bumblebee
doesn’t know
this, so he goes
ahead and flies
anyway.
Taken up in a
vision, at first
all the prophet
Ezekiel sees are
piles and piles of
dry bones
in the
midst of
a
parched
desert. These dry bones
are a metaphor for a
nation, a people who have
lost everything and are liv
ing in the midst of exile.
Ezekiel is then faced with
a question by the Lord God
Almighty, “Son of man,”
God asks, “can these bones
live again?” With gut-
wrenching honesty, Ezekiel
responds with the only
words he can muster, “O
Sovereign LORD, you
alone know.” It is impor
tant to note that Ezekiel
doesn’t refer to God by just
any name. Ezekiel refers
to God as “Yahweh,” the
most powerful name for
God in the Old Testament.
To add an exclamation
point to the most powerful,
most holy name of God,
Ezekiel says that Yahweh
is sovereign, the king who
is still in complete control
of a people wallowing in a
quick sand of despair. So I
ask you, “What does one
do when given so little
hope?” What Ezekiel
shows us is that we believe
anyway! Isn’t that the les
son of the bumble bee? A
bumble bee doesn’t know it
should not be able to fly; it
just flies anyway!
In his book “Faith
Works,” Jim Wallis shares
that when things seem
absolutely impossible,
change begins when some
one, anyone is willing to
believe. Speaking of the
changes to aparthied and
the falling of the Berlin
Wall, Wallis says, “People
had to really believe such
things could be done before
they were possible. That
‘believing’ is the essence of
faith, and the beginning of
any change...Hope always
precedes change. Hope is
the substance of faith and
the only absolutely indis
pensable ingredient for
individual and social
transformation.” God
looks at Ezekiel, one of the
very first persons to be
exiled to Babylon, a man
who has seen his beloved
city destroyed, the sacred
Temple desecrated, the
Davidic king imprisoned in
a foreign land. God looks
at Ezekiel and asks this
great prophet who is gaz
ing over heaps upon heaps
of dry bones in a parched
desert, “...can these bones
live again?” After Ezekiel’s
response of belief, God
gives him a new hope,
"Prophesy to these bones
and say to them,
'Dry bones, hear
the word of the
LORD! 5 This is
what the
Sovereign LORD
says to these
bones: I will
make breath [a]
enter you, and
you will come to
life. 6 I will
attach
tendons
to you
and make
flesh
come upon you and cover
you with skin; I will put
breath in you, and you will
come to life. Then you will
know that I am the
LORD.’"
God can and will give to
those of us wallowing in a
quicksand of despair this
same new hope. So when
we find ourselves in cir
cumstances wherein we
should not be able to
believe, believe anyway,
because our God is still in
control. It is when we put
our faith in this God that a
wellspring of hope will
carry us through even the
most difficult times in our
lives. You see bumble bees
do not know they are not
supposed to fly; they just
fly anyway. So in the face
of circumstances which
lead us to despair, let us
muster the courage to
believe anyway, because it
is then that we will find
the hope of God.
