Martha Waldrep Carter
May 29,1923 - April 28,2008
Martha Waldrep Carter, 84, passed away on Monday
April 28, 2008 in Perry. Visitation will be Tuesday, April
29 at Monroe County Memorial Chapel in Forsyth from 5
to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April
30 at 11 a.m. at the Monroe County Memorial Chapel.
Interment will follow at Monroe Hills Memorial Gardens
in Forsyth. The Rev. Stanley Harrell will officiate. The
family suggests donations be made to the Alzheimer’s
Association, Georgia Chapter, 1925 Century Blvd., N.E.,
Atlanta, GA 30346, in lieu of flowers.
Mrs. Carter was born May 29, 1923 in Forsyth to the
late Inez and Wallace Waldrep. She is preceded in death
by her brother Donald Waldrep of Forsyth. She was
retired from teaching after teaching for 30 years in
Lakeland, Ga. and Lake City, Fla. She has lived for the
last 17 years in Perry, Ga.
Mrs. Carter is survived by her son and daughter-in-law
Steve and Janet Carter of Perry; brother and sister-in-
law George and Dee Waldrep of Forsyth; granddaughters,
Rebecca and Lauren Carter and great granddaughter,
Kailey Carter, all of Perry.
Monroe County Memorial Chapel has charge of
arrangements.

Martha Jean Buice Walker
September 8,1939 - April 22, 2008
Mrs. Martha Jean Buice Walker, 68, of Barnesville
passed away Tuesday, April 22, 2008 in a Spalding
County healthcare facility. Mrs. Walker was a native of
Lamar County. She was the daughter of the late Mr.
Willis Robert Buice and the late Mrs. Sarah Rebecca
Graham Buice, and was preceded in death by her hus
band, Mr. Clarence Walker, Jr.. Mrs. Walker was a
Licensed Practical Nurse with Monroe County Hospital.
She was a member of the Nazarene Church.
Survivors include her companion Jerry Glover of
Barnesville; daughters, Diana Cunningham (Charles) of
Barnesville, Wanda Kay Morris (Keith) of Barnesville,
Janet Marie Campbell (Greg) of Culloden and Jean
Wismiski (Joe) of McDonough; son, Bennie Robert
“Robbie” Skinner (Kari) of Zebulon; brothers Winton
Buice (Pat) of Forsyth; Paul Buice (Patricia) of
Barnesville; David Buice of Barnesville, Eddie Buice
(Sandra) of Forsyth, Wayne Buice (Peggy) of Griffin and
Joe Buice (Barbara) of Barnesville; sisters Lenez Taylor
(Haskell) of Barnesville, Barbara Burford (Larry) of
Barnesville, Elizabeth Hall (Ronald) of Griffin and Carol
Dukes (Dickie) of Woodbury; 15 grandchildren and one
great grandchild.
Funeral services were held Friday, April 25 in the
Barnesville Church of the Nazarene with Rev. Lonnie
Grant officiating. Interment followed in Greenwood
Cemetery.
Williams Funeral Home of Barnesville had charge of
the arrangements.
Mary Fisher
August 10,1918 - April 20, 2008
Mary McKenney Fisher, 89, passed away April 20, 2008
after a series of illnesses. She was born in Smarr, on Aug.
10, 1918 to Berner and Bessie Gose McKenney but spent
most of her life in Florida.
Mary moved with her parents and three siblings to
Miami in 1926. There she graduated from the historic
Miami Senior High School in 1937 and was married to
Murray L. Fisher in November 1941. The Fishers lived in
Orlando, St. Petersburg, and Jacksonville, Fla., as well as
Allendale, N.J., before retiring to Cross Creek, Fla.
Mary was a dedicated wife and mother, serving as a
Cub Scout den mother, Girl Scout troop leader, P.T.A. offi
cer, and choir mother for the Fishers’ two children. While
living at Cross Creek, she was active in the Citra United
Methodist Church and the Cross Creek Homemakers
Club, where she served as president and treasurer.
She is survived by her daughter, Joyce F. Reynolds of
Jacksonville, Fla.; son, Robert A. Fisher of Pass
Christian, Miss.; sister, Carolyn McKenney Young Regan
of Sebring, Fla.; three granddaughters, Maggie Reynolds
and Anna Reynolds McClellen of Jacksonville, and
Natalie Fisher of Gulfport, Miss.; and great-grandson
Brice McClellan. Her husband and her brothers, Berner
McKenney, Jr. and Robert McKenney, predeceased her.
Funeral services were held at Monroe County Memorial
Chapel Saturday April 26 with burial at Monroe Hills
Memorial Gardens.
The family wishes to thank the staff and residents of
the Atrium of Regency in Jacksonville, Fla. for their
friendship and loving care of Mary during the last four
years of her life.

ALEXANDER KELLY
Alexander Kelly was
enlisted March 1, 1864 in
Macon by Maj. Rowland.
He was captured May 6,
1864 at the Wilderness and
his name appears on a list
of Prisoners of War at
Point Lookout, Maryland.
Date of arrival at Belle
Plain, Virginia May 17,
1864. He was transferred
to Elmira, N. Y. on August
10, 1864 and thence to the
U. S. A. General Hospital
in Baltimore, Maryland
February 15, 1865. He
died there on April 9, 1865
of chronic diarrhea. The
company Muster Roll for
January and February
1865 shows that he was
due money from enlistment
and that he was absent
and in the hands of the
enemy.
The Record of Death and
Interment states that he
was married and his
widow lived in Rocky
Mount, Georgia. He was
40 years old and a native
of Georgia. The date of
death and burial is April 9-
10.
ANDREW H. MAYS
Andrew H. Mays was
enlisted October 7, 1864 in
Forsyth for the war. He
was present for the
November and December
1864 Company Muster roll
with remarks: ‘served in
Cavalry in State Service
previous to enlisting in
Confederate service.’ On
the roll for January and
February, 1865, last on
which his name appears,
he was present.
He was paroled at
Appomattox, Va. April 9,
1865.
A. C. MERRITT
A. C. Merritt enlisted in
company A, 14th Georgia
regiment in Forsyth March
15, 1862 to serve three
years or the war. He was
discharged on surgeon’s
certificate of disability at
Richmond on July 23,
1862. “He has done no
service since he reached
Virginia in March last, has
several times been certified
to hospitals and on his
return to his company been
prostrated by slight
fatigue. He is physically
unable to perform military
duty. I recommend his dis
charge.’ Signed by R. L.
Roddey, Surgeon 14th Ga.
Regiment.
The certificate of disabili
ty shows that he was 19
years of age, five feet eight
inches, fair complexion,
blue eyes, light hair and by
occupation a farmer.
He died 20 November
1922 and is buried in the
Forsyth city Cemetery.
Included in his pension
application is a bill dated
28 April 1926 from C. E. &
G. W. TRIBBLE of
Forsyth for a casket, grave
digging, etc. for $152 with
a notation that it was for
the ‘funeral expenses of
A.C. Merritt who died
without owning sufficient
property to pay this bill.’

Andrew H. Moran was
enlisted as a Private in
Macon, Ga. on April 23,
1863 by Major Rowland for
the war. The Company

Barnesville who is AWOL
from his unit in Iraq is
now also
charged
with
using
stolen
checks
to try to
open a
checking
account
at
Farmer’s
Bank in
Forsyth.
On BENNETT
April 17,
Farmers Bank notified the
Forsyth Police Department
that a new client had
opened an account using
stolen checks, said Maj.
Matt Perry of the Forsyth
Police Department. Police
were told the suspect,
Joshua Bennett of
Barnesville, was coming to

the bank so Sgt. Shawn
Knight staked out there
until his arrival. Once
Bennett arrived at the
bank, he was arrested
without incident.
During his interview it
was discovered that he was
an active duty U.S. States
Marine who was AWOL
from his unit and that the
Marines were unaware of
his absence. His unit is
currently deployed in Iraq.
Bennett was charged
with 10 counts of forgery
and two counts of deposit
account fraud. Military
police from the U.S. Marine
Corps came to Forsyth to
take Bennett to face deser
tion charges.
