Seniors ready for real world
By Abigail Salazar, Arjarki
Smith, and Allyssa Thrash
As the end of the school year
nears, the seniors of 2008 are both
stressed and excited. Leaving
familiar faces and support sys
tems, branching out alone, facing
the challenges of becoming an
adult...can be frightening.
Students wonder how they will
balance the challenges of continu
ing their education and/or gaining
employment.
Senior Coral Waller, who plans to
move to another city after gradua
tion, says that she feels, “very shy
and nervous about starting over.”
She is not alone. Many feel over
whelmed with the expectations
placed on them and the changes
about to occur.
Still, here is a thought each stu
dent should consider: The educa
tional goal at MP is not to simply
teach academic courses but to
teach life skills as well. At this
point, all seniors have learned the
skills necessary to successfully
complete any future endeavor.
Each has learned the discipline it
takes to follow rules and succeed
in environments outside of the
classroom. So Seniors - never fear.
The tools to survive are buried
within!
Iraq War No. 1 issue forMP * Issue Tracker
By Chelsea Herr
and Chris Sherrell
When a teen turns eighteen they are legally
allowed to vote. For the first time these individu
als are encouraged to make important decisions
regarding taxes, health care, social security, and
even war. Buddy Long, a junior at Mary Persons
states, “Being registered to vote really gives me a
chance to help settle some of the issues facing our
nation. For me, the biggest issue is the war in
Iraq. Before I vote for a candidate, I will definite
ly consider his position on this important event.”
Unfortunately, a recent national survey indicates
that only 54% of all high school students actually
vote. That means many young adults have no
voice in decisions that might affect the jobs that
are available to them after graduation. They have
no voice in the amount of money taken out of
his/her check each week. They simply have no
voice. They may rant and
rave about the need to
leave Iraq but the sounds
are a whisper in the
wind. They may be
angered about the gas
prices at the pump but
their anger will go
unheard. So, as a
United States citizen
use your right to be
heard. Make important
decisions and express your
opinion by voting.
Here at Mary Persons we con
ducted our own survey. We asked registered stu
dent voters what issues facing our nation are
most important. The chart below indicates their
choices.
Sindersine students complete heavy-duty bridge
By Devon Bezold
Thirty two kilograms! That’s the
amount Parker Padgett’s and Zach
Cato’s balsa wood bridge, which was
built in Mr. Sindersine’s technology
class, can support. It doesn’t seem
like much, but for a small balsa wood
and glue bridge, supporting 5,387
times its own weight is no small feat.
The 5.95 gram bridge was built with
in the required measurements of 8 to
10 inches for length and 2 to 3 inches
for height. There also is a small spac
ing in the middle where a testing rod
can be inserted. The testing rod is
attached to a special machine that
measures the amount of weight and
pressure that bridges can support.
Parker and Zach said the key to
keeping the weight of this bridge
very light and efficient was by using
very little glue.
