Tornado? Hwy. 42 resident says yes
The National Weather
Service says no tornados
hit Monroe County when
storms ravaged Middle
Georgia on Mother’s Day
last week. Actual tornados,
they say, didn’t emerge
until the storm moved into
Bibb County.
But Richard Clifton of
Hwy. 42 in southern
Monroe County begs to dif
fer. Clifton said trees on
his property are twisted in
every direction, an indica
tion that the storm was not
merely straight-line winds.
“I could see a funnel
shape in the lightning
flashes,” said Clifton, who
watched the storm wreak
havoc from his barn. “It
was a small tornado,
regardless of what anybody
wants to say.”
County EMA director
Matt Perry said that could
very well be. He hadn’t
seen Clifton’s property yet
but said he thinks a torna
do touched down near the
intersection of Pine Grove
Church Road and Hwy. 74.
But he said the weather
service says a tornado
doesn’t show up on their
radar in the county. Clifton
countered that radars
“don’t see around corners.”
“They can call it a mild
puff of wind if they want,”
said, “but I saw a tornado.”
Perry said whether
Monroe County can report
a tornado or not won’t play
a big role in whether the
county is eligible for disas
ter relief.
