Cannon kills big game in So. Africa
Monroe County’s John Cannon shot and killed a 500-pound kudu on a South African hunting safari April
25. Cannon was joined by a host of Monroe Countians on his fourth hunting trip to the Port Elizabeth re

kudu, a member of the antelope family, with a .308 Browning A bolt rifle. Cannon is having the kudu’s car
cass shipped back to Georgia and Cannon plans to have it mounted. Cannon handles the U.S. side of busi
ness for the South African operation, which he met through Safari Club International. Anyone interested
in joining Cannon on a future trip may give him a call at 994-1508.

New pediatric room at hospital
It was a dream in the heart of nurse Nilsa Elias to have a special pediatric room for Monroe County Hospi
tal. With the assistance of nursing and medical staff, hospital maintence department, and Monroe Coun
ty Hospital Auxiliary, the dream became a reality. Monroe County Hospital Auxilary President Tullye Ralph,
Chair Sharron Bright, Gayle Watson, Liz Caldwell, Clarise Durden and other Auxiliary members raised
money for this special room. Their fund raising efforts provided the furniture, flooring, bedding, books,
curtains, TV/VCR and other needed items. The nursing staff, along with the maintence department, dedi
cated many hours of their personal time, painting and decorating the room with playful animal decals
and accessories. Elias said, "This was an ambitious project but the hard work of hospital staff and auxi
lary members has paid off. My heartfelt thanks to all for their time, energy and dedication in making this
dream a reality."
