The Arts Alliance will host Forsyth-
Monroe County’s Business After Hours
from 5:30-7:30 p.m.
May 24-25
BBQ and Yard Sale
The High Falls Volunteer Fire
Department will hold a BBQ and yard
sale on May 24 and 25. BBQ plates
are $6.50 and can be purchased on
Saturday and Sunday at 11 am. Plates
include BBQ pork, baked beans, cole
slaw, chips and drink. The yard sale
will be Saturday at 7 a.m. and Sunday
at 8 a.m. Ending times for yard sale
and BBQ are unknown. Donations for
the yard sale can be dropped off at the
High Falls Fire Dept. Call for pick up
at 478-994-0304.
Juliette River Club trail ride
There will be a horse trail ride
Saturday, May 24 at 10 a.m. at Robert
Williams’ property at 4111 Juliette Rd
(follow the signs). The ride will last for
about an hour and a half, with lunch
provided. The cost is $20 and proceeds
will benefit the Juliette River Club.

Oak Grove Holiness Church to
sponsor car wash
Oak Grove Holiness Church will
sponsor a car wash on Saturday, May
24 in the Wal-Mart parking lot.

Jarrell Plantation to host
family farm day
Watch Jarrell Plantation come to life
with various crafts and chores such as
spinning, weaving, blacksmithing,
woodstove cooking, and house tours
Monday, May 26 from 10:30 a.m. - 3
p.m. at “Family Farm Day.”
Admission is $4 for adults, $3.50 for
seniors; children 6-17 are $2.50 and
children 5 and under are free.

Celebration for Scott Cowart
The community is invited to celebrate
Scott Cowart's tenure as Superinten
dent of Monroe County Schools during
a drop-in reception in his honor on
Wednesday, May 28, from 3:30-5:30
p.m. at the Mary Persons Freshman
Campus cafeteria. A formal time of
presentations will begin at 4:30 p.m.

Dedication of Old City Hall
On May 29 at 5 p.m., the historic
City Hall will be formerly dedicated as
the new Welcome Center. The location
will be 5 West Adams, Forsyth. A
reception hosted by the Chamber of
Commerce and the Development
Authority will follow the dedication.
May 31
Benefit for Dusty Ellington
The MP Booster Club will host an
MP Soccer Alumni game to benefit
cancer patient Dusty Ellington. The
event will be held on Saturday, May 31
at the Billy Lancaster Field at the MP
Soccer complex on Thornton Rd behind
the bank. The game will begin at 7
p.m. and a contribution of $5 per per
son is requested. There will be conces
sions available. All proceeds will go
towards helping pay expenses for
Dusty’s treatment.

Mickey Johnson, captain

county fire department,
wrecked his Chevrolet
Custom DeLuxe truck on
his way to answer a fire
call in the High Falls Area.
The call turned out to be a
false alarm. Captain
Johnson said the call
marked the second false
alarm in the last two
weeks...A $364,483.97 law
suit for false imprisonment
filed against Forsyth's
mayor, his wife and mem
bers of the Forsyth Police
Department is dismissed.
Dismissal came upon
plaintiff Richard Leon
Ingram's request...Three
Monroe County volunteer
firemen are indicted on
charges of arson, and one
of the three is charged
with murder. The charges
stem from a series of 20 or
more suspected arsons
recorded in 1976 and 1977.
Robert Charles Alexander
was charged with murder
ing an elderly and disabled
woman, who burned to
death in her home on
Juliette Road in October of
1976...Monroe County law
enforcement officers
become concerned over the
growing rate of alcohol
abuse among juveniles...A
Monroe County girl drowns
in Sanders pond on Brent
Road. An eight-year-old
girl and her younger sister
slipped off to the pond
behind their house while
their mother took a nap.
Members of the communi
ty, sheriffs department
and Monroe County Rescue
Auxiliary searched for
approximately 45 minutes
before finding the girl's
body in the pond...
1988
Indictments against a
total of 55 persons are
issued by the grand jury of
Monroe County Superior
Court...Camp Kaleo gears
up for its first full session
of activities and is expect
ing some 1,000 boys from
throughout Georgia to visit
the camp this summer. The
camp became operational
in 1987, but will offer full
camping programs this
year. The property consists
of 110 acres of land, includ
ing a 29-acre lake.
Camping programs are
designed for "Lads" who
have completed grades 1-3
up through "High School
Young Men" who have com
pleted grades 9-12...A
Forsyth resident faces drug
charges after being arrest
ed at her apartment earlier
in the month. She was
charged with possession of
marijuana with intent to
distribute and possession
of cocaine with intent to
distribute...Three Monroe
County Middle School stu
dents are honored by the
Junior Deputy program for
essays they wrote during
the school year...The City
of Forsyth Fire
Department responds to
the Travelodge Motel when
lightning damages the
electrical system and caus
es several air conditioning
units to short out. No one
was injured but the Motel
was evacuated while fire
fighters made sure units
were safe.
1998
Monroe County schools
celebrate ACES day. This
program was implemented
by a physical education
teacher in New Jersey to
get one school in each state
to exercise on a specific
day and time. ACES stands
for "American Children
Exercising
Simultaneously".. .People
magazine reports on the
coverage of the murders at
Lake Juliette, which
resulted in the death row
conviction of one local
man...Construction of the
new High Falls water
tower nears
completion...The Monroe
County Board of Education
discusses further projects
for the possible one percent
sales tax referendum
(SPLOST). The project list
includes estimates of
future irrigation work at
various Monroe County
Schools...The fourth wave
of Operation Strap 'N Snap
has been set up to coincide
with Buckle Up America
Week in an effort to
increase the state's seat
belt usage rate.

Birthing Inn. He weighed 5
pounds, 14 oz and was 19
inches long.
His maternal grandpar

Durden of Forsyth. His
paternal grandparents are
Leonard and Joanne
Ciolkosz of Naperville, IL.
Community
Improvement Coalition of
Monroe County (CICMC)
is hosting their free sum
mer camp on June 2-June
27 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
for ages 5-14. There will
also be workshops in July
and August for those high
school students who want
to practice the high
school graduation tests
and the accelerated read
ing program for those
students who want to
increase their reading
levels and comprehension
skills. These programs
are sponsored through
the City of Forsyth Police
Department and the
Monroe County Sheriff’s
Department.
Last year there were
over 125 students that
participated. The city of
Forsyth waived the utili
ty costs for the months of
June, July and August
and the Monroe County
Commissioners provided
funds throughout the
year. CICMC received a
grant from Bright from
the Start to provide
nutritious meals along
with two cooks and two
teachers. Middle GA
Consortium employed
four high school students
to assist with the pro
gram and give them the
opportunity to learn job
skills.
The Recreation
Department will assist
with the program this
year. The Board of
Education has approved
a request for the use of
two buses to transport
students to and from the
sites, the gym for sports
activities, and two class
rooms at William
Hubbard Middle School
for educational work
shops and quiet reading
time.
Activities at camp this
summer will include
reading, writing, comput
er skills, arts and crafts,
sports games and field
trips to name a few.
