MP grads tour Spain
Monroe County schools
have a goal of being a
world class school system.
In order to help achieve
that goal, Mary Persons
High School offers many
opportunities for students
to travel and see the world
that extends beyond the
four walls of a classroom.
The program is called the
Global Classroom and has
most recently offered stu
dents a chance to travel on
a summer trip to Spain
and Morocco.
A group of recent Mary
Persons graduates accom
panied by two MP teachers
spent 12 days touring
southern Spain. The trip
began in the Spanish capi
tal of Madrid where partic
ipants enjoyed walking
through many of the
plazas, viewing master
pieces at the famous Prado
Museum, and touring the
Royal Palace. The group
later traveled to Toledo
and marvelled at the
charm of the ancient town.
They visited the old wind
mills of the Andalusian
countryside made famous
by the character Don
Quijote who mistook them
for giants. In Granada, the
group toured La Alhambra,
an incredible 14th-century
Moorish castle that was
later used by King
Ferdinand and Queen
Isabella.
The next stop on the trip
was the Costa del Sol on
the Mediterranean Sea
where the participants
opted to take a ferry across
the Strait of Gibraltar into
Africa. Students learned
about the local culture
while winding through the
narrow alleys of the
Moroccan marketplace.
They visited a rug shop, a
pharmacy filled with natu
ral remedies, and even
rode a camel. The group
then travelled to Seville
where they saw a bullfight
ing ring, climbed the tower
of the famous cathedral
where Christopher
Columbus is buried, and
viewed beautiful mosaics
as they walked through
the Plaza de Espana. Later
in Cordoba, students
toured an 8th-century
mosque before enjoying
their first trip on the AVE
high-speed train.
Another highlight of the
trip included visiting the
medieval town of Segovia
and seeing a fortress, a
cathedral, and a 2000 year-
old Roman aqueduct.
Students also walked
through the historic palace
of El Escorial and learned
about the history of the
Spanish monarchy as they
toured the tombs of the
past kings and queens of
Spain. The final stop of the
trip was in Barcelona
where students spent some
time at the beach, strolled
down Las Ramblas, and
learned about the architec
ture of Antonio Gaudi as
they viewed his Gothic
cathedral known as La
Sagrada Familia that has
been under construction
for 200 years.
Plans are already under
way for next year's travel
opportunities. Contact
Kristy Slaughter at Mary
Persons High School for
more information.
