One of life’s lessons:
Be prepared and don’t swear
Monroe County
Hospital adds MRI
I t is a cosmic coincidence
that the realization that
travelers needed
first aid kits and
my introduction to
swearing occurred at the
same time. I was 6 years
old, it was 1957, and we
were on vacation. One
day we all piled into my
father’s 1948 Plymouth.
We went to get a Dilly Bar
at the brand new
Daily Queen and
then drove to the
levee to look at the
Mississippi River.
In the back seat my 3-year old
brother was to the left of me,
and my 9-year old sister to my
right. I was in the middle and
as typical I stood looking over
the front seat to see what my
parents were doing. I always
paid close attention to what
they were saying. I can only
surmise that things were not
going well that day.
My Dad said to Mom, “Well
where the %#$* do you want to
go?”
And Mom says, “I don’t care
where the $(*@ you go.”
To which I piped in, “I don’t
care where the *$(# we go
either.”
Tires screeched. My parents
both turned and gave
me that stare that
only could mean bad
news for me. My back
side became the
instant beneficiary of
blunt repetitive hand
therapy. It hurt. So
naturally I asked Mom
if she had any Bactine
to take the sting
out. She didn’t.
It was then I
realized that peo
ple needed to have first aid kits
with them when they traveled.
And of course I appreciated my
first learning experience on
swearing, and not exactly from
the bottom of my heart, but a
little lower.
Fortunately the people at the
American College of Emergency
Physician’s Foundation have
put together a pamphlet called
the “Traveler’s First Aid Kit.” It
is a wealth of helpful informa
tion such as:
• What to do before you leave
• Basic Kit Contents
• Hints for Hiking and
Outdoor Travel
• Hints for Travel by Cruise
Ship
• Hints for Foreign Travel
If you would like a copy of the
Traveler’s First Aid Kit pam
phlet please stop by the new

West Adams Street in Forsyth.
The Chamber phone is 478-994-

the time to look at the new
office. I would never have
guessed that they could make
that old building look so good.
Or send me a self addressed
stamped envelope and I will
mail you one. Forward
requests to me at: Dr. John

Monroe County Hospital and
Alliance Imaging, Inc. announce
the expansion and upgrade of
their Magnetic Resonance
Imaging (MRI) service, which will
enable physicians to schedule
patients five days a week and see
inside the human body in ways
previously not available at this
facility. This new and improved
service will allow more patients to
undergo advanced imaging proce
dures within their own communi
ty-
“The expansion and upgrade of
this imaging modality comple
ments and will greatly extend the
range of high quality diagnostic
services already available to the
community’s residents,” said O.J.
Booker, CEO of the hospital. “In
addition, we will be able to offer
more flexible scheduling for easier
access by the general public.”
Magnetic Resonance Imaging
(MRI) is a diagnostic imaging
technology that provides detailed
pictures of the body without ioniz
ing radiation. During an MRI
procedure, the patient is placed
within the opening of a large
donut-shaped magnet and radio
waves are passed through the
body, providing information about
that part of the body to the com
puter, which, in turn displays the
image. Computer-generated
images clearly show healthy and
diseased tissue in the brain,
spine, joints, and many other
parts of the body.
The General Electric 1.0 Tesla
Short-Bore MRI unit at Monroe
County Hospital is outfitted with
advanced components and is spe
cially designed to better accommo
date obese and/or claustrophobic
patients. “The system has state-
of-the-art hardware and software,
but most importantly, it will be
available full-time for our
patients,” said Megan Randall,
Director of Radiology. “Having
this service full-time at Monroe
County Hospital enables us to
spend more time with each
patient, and will allow us to com
plete the types of studies locally
that patients previously had to go
to Atlanta or Macon to receive.”
The system is considered non-
invasive and it offers fewer risks
than some diagnostic alternatives
In addition to early detection and
more accurate diagnoses, it may
lessen the need for lengthy hospi
tal stays, therefore reducing
health care costs.
Full-time MRI service is slated
to begin June 30.
