Monroe County:
A Great Place to Hunt, Fish and Watch Wildlife
If you enjoy hunting, fishing,
nature photography or wildlife
watching, Monroe County
is THE place for you. The
county offers some of the
best and most diverse
wildlife-based recreation
found anywhere in the
Peach State.
The sun never sets on the
county’s fishing
opportunities.
Regardless of whether
you enjoy fishing for
catfish or crappie under
the pale light of the
moon, trolling the cool depths of
Lake Juliette for striped and hybrid
bass or deftly dropping a popping
bug along the myriad of snags that
hug the shoreline of the Ocmulgee
River, Monroe County’s lakes and
streams offer a wealth of heart
stopping fishing action.
More than a dozen species of game
and panfish make their home in our
waters. Largemouth and shoal bass,
shellcracker, bluegill, redbreast,
striped bass, hybrid bass, crappie,
and catfish are plentiful and ready
to supply both young and old anglers
alike plenty of angling action.
Lake Juliette, High Falls Lake and
the Ocmulgee are the three favorite
destinations of Monroe County
fishermen and women. However,
scores of farm ponds and
streams also offer folks
some great fishing.
Hunters can enjoy their
sport from August to May.
During these 10 months
sportsmen and women can
hunt a variety of game
birds and mammals
including rabbit, raccoon,
opossum, quail, turkey,
deer, ducks, geese,
woodcock, and mourning
doves.
The hunting season officially
begins in August with the opening of
squirrel season and doesn’t end until
the Turkey Season closes in the
middle of May. During this, one of
the longest hunting seasons in the
country, hunters can hunt white
tailed deer, more than two dozen
species of ducks and geese, rabbits,
fox, woodcock, wild turkey, squirrels
and raccoon.
The county has long been
recognized as one of the best places
in the state of hunt white-tailed
deer. Although, in recent years,
trophy bucks have proven difficult to
come by, the county’s abundant deer
