A daughter’s
poem for
Forsyth native
back from Iraq
Forsyth native Vicitas Lyons Jr. has been serving his
country in Iraq with the U.S. Army. Mary Lyons, the
daughter of Vicitas and his wife Sharon, wrote this poem
about her father while he was stationed in the Middle
East. The poem was published in The Lantern, an art
and literary review magazine published at Mary’s school,
Northside High in Columbus. Mr. Lyons is shown above
with daughter Mary and son Courtney. He is the son of
Vicitas and Elnora Lyons of Forsyth. The poem goes like
this:
Gray skies amongst my blue I Like death the pain was
when he departed I False smiles plastered only hiding the
pain / The pain of teenage girl’s father sent away /
Nothing worse than ripping the mold of a family
apart I The government I blame/For sending him
afar / ’’Fight for your country”/1 truly curse these
words / Whether it be my pain I Or my misunderstanding
of the blurred truth that I do unfairly blame I Behind the
gate I capture what may become my last chance to
see /Who knows? /Who knows the fate of a soldier?/His
life rests in God’s hands I My solemn family can pray, only
hope to see his face again / That day I’ll always remem
ber/My dad detached from our lives / Bound by the
American flag /With a gun dangling by his side / Terrified
I broke down/My dad a killer/No a protector of the
free /Performing his duties to his country /For you /For
me /Yet at the moment my patriotism
falters /Disheartened by my teary-eyed mom/Burdened by
the enigma /Will we see him again?/Hear his voice
again?/Hear him laugh or see him cry /God please don’t
let my father die/An army brat’s plea to the heavenly
skies/Iraq, have mercy on my dad/My father, my friend,
a husband, and a soldier last
