Washington trip brings history,
government to life for MP student
The best thing about the Washington
^ lYouth tour was the opportunity to see ho
our government works.

Mary Persons student
Jessica Haskins was
among 105 students cho
sen for the annual
Washington Youth Tour
sponsored yearly by
Electric Membership Coops
June 13-19. The tour was
June 13th — 19th.
The delegates got to see
Ford’s Theatre, the house
where Abe Lincoln died,
the Washington Memorial,
the Jefferson Memorial,
the Lincoln Memorial, the
Imo Jima memorial, the
Vietnam wall, the World
War II Memorial, Arlington
Cemetery, the National
Cathedral, Union Station,
Mount Vernon, the
Newseum, all of the
Smithsonian Museums and
the Holocaust Museum.
They also took a tour of
the White House, got to sit
in on a Senate meeting,
dedicate a wreath at the
tomb of the Unknown
Soldier, see the
Constitution and
Declaration of
Independence in the
National Archives, sit in
the Supreme Court
Chambers, see the silent
drill team perform at the
Imo Jima Memorial, meet
both Johnny Isakson and
Saxby Chambliss, and
have a forum with our rep
resentatives.
“My favorite places were
the Jefferson Memorial,
the Newseum, and the
Holocaust Museum. I love
Thomas Jefferson. He is
my favorite founding
father,” said Jessica. “He
was an intellect that chal
lenged so much during his
day. So getting to see his
monument was a high
point for me.”
Another high point for
Jessica was the Newseum,
which contains newspaper
articles from around the
world during different
times of crisis, including
front pages from around
the world on September 11,
2001.
“They also had papers
from JFK’s and MLK’s
assassinations, Pearl
Harbor, the Treaty of
Versailles, the capture of
Saddam Hussein, and any
other major
event you could
think of,” said
Jessica. “They
also had a large
chunk of the
Berlin Wall, and
the top of one of the World
trade Center Towers.”
The Holocaust museum
was probably the most
humbling experience of all,
says Jessica. “ We started
at the top and worked our
way down. It was terrify
ing to realize what one
man and his followers
could inflict on so many
people,” Jessica said. “The
most memorable thing for
me was this one room
about the size of a basket
ball court, and the entire
room was nothing but
shoes. It was astonishing
to see the number of shoes,
and really put a visual rep
resentation in my mind of
how many people suffered
during this dark point in
our history.”
Jessica and the other del
egates also had an oppor
tunity to meet with
Representatives and ask
questions.
“The EMC’s have a lot of
small energy lobbyists in
Washington so we were
really encouraged to ask
about offshore drilling, pro
moting green power, and
other questions relating to
the environment,” said
Jessica. She asked the pos
sibility of developing green
power and what source the
House sees as having the
most potential to be devel
oped.
“The best thing about the
Washington Youth tour
was the opportunity to see
how our government
works,” said Jessica, who
took a civics last year and
was excited to see the
things she learned in
action.
“It is not until you are
standing on the steps of
the Capitol or in the
Chamber of the Supreme
Court do you truly realize
the magnitude and great
ness of our country,” said
Jessica. “You are truly
proud to be an American in
Washington D.C.”
Jessica is very interested
in global warming and the
environment and says the
largest opportunity on her
trip was making connec
tions. She met with an
EMC government, Matt
Sawhill, and he gave her
his card and the name of a
man who works with
Johnny Isakson’s staff in
Atlanta on Environmental
Policy.
“He has connected me
with people in the
Environmental Protection
Agency and the
Environmental Protection
Department to meet with
and discuss career oppor
tunities,” Jessica said.
“Since sixth grade I have
known that I want to work
in the Environmental field,
it is my passion, and this
trip really let me find an
outlet through which to
achieve my dream.”
It wasn’t all business
though. Jessica says she
made some great friends
who share a lot of interests
with her.
“It was nice to be with
such an informed and
intellectual bunch of kids
my age,” she said. “Here I
am just the dork in our
group, but there I realized
that it was this group of
people who will make a dif
ference in the world.”
Jessica says she enjoyed
debating with fellow dele
gates about the upcoming
presidential election and
proudly wore an ‘I support
John McCain’ button the
entire trip along with a
“Friends Don’t Let Friend’s
Vote Democrat shirt.” The
group held a mock election
there with all the delegates
from around the U.S and
John McCain won 66% to
33%. “The Washington
Youth Tour was one of the
most memorable experi
ences of my life,” says
Jessica. “It opened so
many doors for my future
and taught me so much
about our nation’s history.
I would like to thank
Central Georgia EMC, Mr.
Christopher and all the
staff there that made this
opportunity possible.”
