Perdue honors ‘mayor* of Indian Springs village
The lady responsible for rehabilitat
ing The Village at Indian Springs has
been honored by the state for her
efforts.
Frankie Willis was recognized by the
Georgia Department of Economic
Development ( GDEcD) for her passion
and personal financial committment to
the revitalization of the The Village at
Indian Springs, a historic area just
north of the Monroe County line along
Hwy. 42. The award was presented by
Gov. Sonny Perdue and Ken Stewart,
GDEcD Commissioner, during the
Govenor’s Conference on Tourism held
at UGA’s Tifton Campus.
Located at the entrance to the oldest
state park in the nation, The Village at
Indian Springs is an example of the of
public and private development work
ing hand-in-hand. The Indian Spring
Hotel ( ca 1823 ) and Chapel ( ca 1890)
were refurbished by the Butts County
Historical Society with $1 million in
tax dollars and opened as a museum to
showcase the rich history of the Creek
Native Americans, the story of the
Stagecoach Trails, and the 1900s
Resort Era with its Grand Hotels.
Many Georgians remember Indian
Springs in the 50’s and 60’s when it
was a popular hang-out with a ferris
wheel, an outdoor bowling alley, and
Friday night dances at the Springs.
People still come to enjoy the natural
mineral water, watch the water run
over the picturesque rocks, and enjoy
the restful, natural beauty of the 100
acre lake and hike through the wood
ed areas. To make the area even
more attractive to tourists, Willis
has purchased and restored most of
the little houses surrounding these
historic sites - creating a charming
cluster of shops, art galleries, guest
cottages, and a cafe’ now known as
The Village at Indian Springs.

PamBittick, Dana Ham offer deals galore
When Pam Bittick and Dana Ham
opened the Smarr Bazaar in 2007,
they wanted to have a variety of
unique and reasonably priced items
for shoppers to choose from.The
store has several booths set up that
offer items ranging from home decor
and books to Mary Persons and
Monroe Academy paraphernalia. If
the Bazaar doesn't have a specific
item, workers will try to find it else
where or make referrals to a place
that carries it. Unlike some stores,
the Bazaar isn't looking to make a
killing off of one item. Bittick and
Ham try to keep things reasonably
priced, with items ranging from 50
cents to $400. Many of the items will
be on sale in the future, with three
booths of collectibles priced at 50%
off, pictures from dealers 20% off
and school paraphernalia 50% off.
New customers can expect to receive
personal assistance from those who
work at the Smarr Bazaar. Bittick
and Ham said they enjoy helping
bargain hunters and collectors find
what they are looking for and
encourage new shoppers to drop by
and check them out. The Smarr
Bazaar is open on Saturdays from
10 a.m.-5 p.m. and is located at 14
Rumble Road, just a few miles from
Bolingbroke and the Forsyth square.
