DOT: Work
may finally
begin on
city’s2003
project in foil
A long-awaited facelift for
Forsyth’s downtown square
may finally get under way
this fall five years after
Forsyth was awarded a
$750,000 grant for the
project.
DOT officials said last
week they will probably
put the project out to bid
in the coming months after
tying up a few more loose
ends, including assessing
the project’s environmental
impact.
Plans call for the project
to include new benches,
trash cans, trees, new
street lamps matching
those at Tift College and
new sidewalks with curb
less ramps and so-called
bulbouts on the corners.
On Monday, the city put
out sandbags to test how
those bulbouts would work
with 18 wheelers. Mayor

Tye Howard said they don’t
want to install the bul
bouts if they’re going to be
destroyed by tractor trail
ers.
Better Hometown direc
tor Laurie Pippin said local
residents will notice big
changes to the main down
town square by next year.
The project’s design firm,
Jeager and Co. of Athens,
has completed plans for
the project. The bulbouts
are similar to what’s been
done in Monticello, and are
designed to slow down traf
fic and make the down
town more pedestrian
friendly.
With the courthouse ren
ovations also expected to
wrap up next year, the cen
tral downtown district will
certainly be more attrac
tive to visitors, said city
officials.
The downtown construc
tion may pose a problem
for the Hometown Holidays
Christmas parade in three
months and the Forsythia
Festival next March. But
chamber of commerce pres
ident Tiffany Andrews said
they can work around it as
long as they have advance
warning of what areas will
be unusable.
The grant for the
streetscape project was
awarded in 2003. City offi
cials said the project was
slowed in part because the
DOT suspended all
streetscape projects for a
period but has rescinded
that suspension.

many of the rural schools were closing
down and students began to primarily
attend school in Forsyth.
According to board chairman Dr. J.Ray
Grant, Sutton is believed to be the first
female elected official in Monroe County
as well.
Last month, the board had narrowed the
choices for the new school name down to a
few choices which also included Cabaniss
Road Elementary.
“We talked about maybe getting away
from naming schools after people,” said
board member Phil Walker. “But, I think
Mrs. Sutton was a special person in
Monroe County history and the more we
thought about it, the more it seemed to be
the best choice.”
Sutton Road, named for Sutton’s family,
is located off Hwy. 83 North near the
school.
According to Jackson Daniel, assistant
superintendent for support services, the
project is on schedule.
Now that the school has a name, the
board will begin focusing on staffing and
realigning the school districts. The dis
tricts are expected to be finalized by
January.
