Miami fugitive caught at Smarr BP
Emergency workers survey the damage to the burned-out BMW.
BY LAURA THACKSTON
A Miami man who led Spaulding
County deputies on a high speed
chase, wrecked and fled on foot was
caught by Monroe County deputies
on Aug. 7 at the Smarr BP station.
Here’s what happened, according
to the sheriff’s office report:
Spaulding County deputies were
chasing the suspect’s BMW down I-
75 and then Rumble Road on Aug. 6
when the suspect wrecked and the
BMW burst into flames. The sus
pect, Charles Warren Johnson, then
fled the scene on foot. Deputies from
the Monroe County Sheriff’s office
spotted the 28-year-old Johnson the
next day, Aug. 7,
at 10:20 a.m. on a
pay phone at the
Smarr BP station.
Johnson’s clothes
were torn and
dirty and he had
numerous cuts on
his arms and legs.
He still had green
leafy material in
his head from the
night before. When asked for his
name and date of birth, he said he
didn’t have to give that information
to officers and asked why they were
questioning him. Deputies told him
he was the prime suspect in the
incident that occurred Aug. 6. Lt.
Freeman asked him for his name
again, but the suspect only repeated
every question asked and wouldn’t
say what his name was. Even
though he was told it was a crime in
Georgia to lie about his name and
date of birth, he gave officers false
information and repeated it several
times, said the report. Finally,
Johnson agreed to quit lying and
gave officers the correct informa
tion. He was arrested for giving
false name/information to officers
and fleeing and attempting to elude.
Incidents
The Forsyth Police
Department reported the
following incidents Aug. 9:
Aug. 9
• 12:50 a.m. A man was
leaving the Shell Station
when he hit one of the
canopy poles and trash
cans attached to the pole.
The driver denied damag
ing anything. It turned out
the driver’s license was
suspended and he was
arrested.
•1:34 p.m. A man said he
stopped at the Shell
Station the previous
Saturday to get gas and
left his wallet. He said the
wallet contained $525
cash, an American Eagle
gift card with $6 on it, dri
ver’s license and social
security card. He said
there was also a Perkins
State Bank Visa debit card
inside, but it didn’t have
any money in the account.
The Monroe County
Sheriff’s Office reported
the following incidents
Aug.8-12:
Aug. 8
•2:03 p.m. A woman said
two people entered her
house on Aug. 6 at about 6
p.m. She said the suspects
went into her son's bed
room and took a Verizon
cell phone before leaving.
The woman's son is a wit
ness in the case. She went
to the Forsyth Police
Department, where the
stolen phone was returned
to her by an unknown
police officer. According to
the complainant, city
police denied the phone
had been stolen but the
officer could not explain
how he got the phone. She
left with the impression
that the city police were
going to investigate the
robbery at her house, even
though she doesn't live in
that vicinity. On the
evening of Aug. 7, three
men approached her house
and the complainant called
911. According to the com
plainant, the suspects
caused damage to her
house by throwing rocks at
it and busted a window,
damaging her siding.
Aug. 9
•6:50 p.m. Sgt.
Grindstaff stopped a
Nissan Maxima on High
Falls Road for failure to
maintain lane. The driver
didn't have a license and
smelled of alcohol. He also
had a warrant for his
arrest in Florida, which he
said was incorrect. He said
he had consumed two
beers an hour and a half
ago. He tested positive for
alcohol and failed field
sobriety tests. He was
charged with failure to
maintain lane, driving
without a license and DUI.
Aug. 10
•7:09 p.m. Deputy C.
Miller was dispatched to
Reedy Creek Road in refer
ence to a theft and damage
to a rental house. The com
plainant said the rental
property had been rented
to a couple, who were
served with an eviction
notice on Aug. 6. When the
owner went to inspect the
property, he found the cou
ple had taken several
items they didn't own and
had damaged parts of the
house. The couple stole the
light and wall plug fix
tures from inside the
house, a window air condi
tioning unit, locks off the
front door and several
plants and shrubs. There
was damage to the front
door, the front porch/deck
and the electric breaker
box.
•7:47 p.m. A complainant
at Russellville Baptist
Church said someone stole
a window air conditioning
unit from the pastor's
study. The unknown sus
pect had access to the
church after removing the
unit but it appeared that
no one had entered the
church. The unit was val
ued at $250.
Aug. 12
•7:18 a.m. A complainant
said several dogs were
able to breech the goat
fence and attack her goats.
She said she couldn't get
there soon enough to stop
the dogs from killing or
maiming eight of her
goats. On Aug. 13, the
dogs entered the goat pen
again and killed the
remaining goats. The goat
owner contacted the possi
ble owner and had plans to
meet with the dogs' owner.

Drugs Used to Manage Type 2 Diabetes
An estimated 20 million Americans have a condition commonly
referred to as diabetes. With type 2 diabetes, there is insulin resist
ance or decreased production of natural body insulin. Insulin is a
hormone responsible for decreasing the amount of glucose in the
bloodstream and regulating the use of glucose by body cells. In type
2 diabetes, glucose builds up in the bloodstream because of a mal
function in either the production of insulin or cellular resistance to
insulin. Signs of type 2 diabetes include increased thirst, frequent
urination, and extreme hunger. The cause in not clearly known,
although abdominal fat and inactivity may play an important role.
Healthy eating and regular physical activity are key components
of keeping diabetes under control. Diabetes medications may be
required in addition to healthy lifestyle habits. Salfonylurea drugs,
such as glipizide (Glucotrol) work to help the body produce more
insulin. Metformin (Glucophage) improves the body’s utilization of
insulin, as well as helps the body to produce less glucose and absorb
less glucose from food. Thiazolidinediones, such as pioglitazone (
Actos) and rosiglitazone (Glyset) work to improve the body’s use of
glucose and help the body produce less glucose. Insulin therapy
may be necessary for some persons with diabetes.
