The Public Record
Fossils missing at High Falls Park
BY LAURA THACKSTON
The Monroe County Sheriffs
office has a lead but still no
arrests after the theft of $7,500
worth of fossils stolen from High
Falls State Park sometime
between Aug. 11-13. According to
a sheriffs report, DNR Ranger
Taylor told Deputy Leggett some
one broke into the Resource
Manager's office and stole $7,500
worth of fossils that belonged to
Mitchell Saint, a utility worker
at the park. The lock on the door
and a display case that contained
several fossils had been
unscrewed and opened. Saint
said he was missing 13 fossils
from the case and that the last
time he had seen them was
Monday, Aug. 11 around noon.
The missing items included rocks
with the imprints of fossils in
them.
Based on the evidence, Leggett
said the burglar had been in no
hurry to steal the fossils and
escaped without notice. The bur
glar unscrewed the lock on the
door, disassembled the case,
removed the fossils, partially
reassembled the case and
screwed the lock back into the
door. Taylor told Leggett the front
gate, which is usually closed at
night, had been out of order for
awhile. It had not been closed or
locked.
Leggett dusted the glass on the
display case for fingerprints, but
was only able to get several par
tial prints from the glass. The
Reporter spoke to the High Falls
State Park Superintendent, who
said at this time there aren't any
suspects and the fossils have not
been recovered.

City sets meeting to discuss sewer project
City officials have apolo
gized but a Sunset Circle
man says they still have
not completed promised
repairs to his yard, which
was damaged during the
installation of new sewer
lines.
Eugene Monroe of 493
Sunset Circle says the con
tractor who installed the
new sewer lines for the U
nion Hill Drive project still
hasn’t completed promised
repairs to his yard. The
city’s utilities committee
has scheduled a meeting
for 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept.
2 at city hall with the con
tractor and area property
owners to discuss the
issue.
An article in the June 11
Reporter said that Monroe
had returned from vaca
tion in Florida to find 25
trees had been cut down
for the sewer line. Monroe
had taken his grievance to
the June 3 city council
meeting and council mem
bers said they’d get it
fixed. But Monroe said
that hasn’t happened.
“My yard’s still a mess,”
said Monroe.
Monroe said the contrac
tor put out brown millet
seed in his yard but has
not put out Bermuda seed

illegal experimental surgeries
which crippled seven victims. U.S.
District Court Judge Ashley
Royal ordered Vito and Foot &
Leg Centers of Georgia to pay
those damages in May 2007. In
his decision, Royal said Vito was
involved in evidence tampering,
perjury, witness intimidation and
wire fraud in a pattern of racket
eering that dated back to 1999
and “continues to the present.”
According to court documents,
Vito has not paid any of the dam
ages.
As of presstime, Vito was still in
jail and was expected to stay
there until he complies with the
order, said federal court officials.
While his office is in Macon,
Vito saw patients regularly in
Forsyth and sometimes performed
surgery at Monroe County
Hospital.
Monroe County Hospital CEO
O.J. Booker said the hospital
medical staff, led by chief of staff
Dr. Patton Smith, is reviewing
the case. Smith said the medical
staff has suspended Vito’s privi
leges and may do so permanently
if the charges are confirmed. He
said no medical board or agency
has notified the hospital so they
hope to get more concrete facts
before taking final action.
